Just got a dedicated flash unit . Right is this a whole new ball game to learn .is bounce the best way to use them as it does seem very bright . Not had a good play with it yet any pointers to using a dedicated flash gun

you can adjust how strong the flash is,you have to press mode afew times and your see the power setting drop on the display
 
I have this flash and it does take a little getting used to when comparing it to the pop up flash. I usually use the flash in TTL mode at a 45 degree angle with the diffuser and reflecter up. Alternatively you can adjust the flash power, or bounce it like you stated.
 
Still looming to get myself one, have played around with a few and found it much better then standard one. Best thing was being able to bounce light of walls spreading the light out.
