Jessops UV filters?

When I purchased my D5000 from Jessops I also picked up one of their own brand UV filters, mainly for lens protection.

Ive never since given it another thought as I just forgot it was even on the lens, but Im wondering if a decent branded UV filter would be better? Often my photos look a little 'washed out' but im not sure if the filter is to blame?

Would a Hoya UV filter be considered a step up from my Jessops filter?
 
To be honest, having no filter would be a step up from any UV filter unless you're using the kit in particularly harsh conditions when it basically acts as protection from damage for your front element.

I'm sure this will open another filter/no filter debate but personally, filters should only be used when they offer a specific not all the time. E.G. ND Grad to stop skies blowing out, Circular Polariser to reduce reflections on water or enhance blue skies.

Take it off, shoot without it for a bit and see the world of difference it makes.

Kinda like walking around with vaseline smeared on your eyes having some cheap filter like that in front of your glass.
 
Any filter dies degrade the image, and it is - just about - detectable. Use a filter if you need it for protection. I for instance do need a filter - when taking photos of my son he has a tendency to crawl up to the lens and put his sticky fingers all over it. I'm forever cleaning the filter and probably wouldn't use the lens if it didn't have one. For clean, dry conditions, there's little need for protection so maybe try shooting without.

When I do use a filter I use Hoya Pro1 multicoateds and clean them regularly. Overall I'm pleased I've used protection over the years, I've had loads of gunk on them, whereas the lens elements are pristinely clean.

I think I know what you mean about "washed out" - I get this sometimes with Nikon jpgs, especially if they are of green grass/foliage for some reason. Have you tried shooting raw and adjusting white balance and saturation in post?
