Joby Gorillapod question

I've recently got my first dslr, a canon 20d with 55-250 lens, and I'm thinking about getting a gorilla pod as a cheap tripod just for when I'm out and about and I have a few quick questions.

First, is the slr zoom gorilla pod only for zoom lenses or can it also be used with the normal screw mount. Also is the zoom model worth £30 more as I don't have any lenses with the inbuilt mount at the moment but it's the area of photography I hope to get into so does it increase stabilisation much?

Also is it fairly lightweight and easy to transport in a rucksack?

Finally for the price is there anything else that I should be looking at or that is worth considering.

This all probably sounds stupid but o'well I'm a noob anyway

Hi Ryan

The Gorilla pod fits to the camera not the lens(unless you have a lens with tripod collar fitted).To get the best out of it you really need a mini ball head.I've used the "zoom" with a 7D and 24-105L lens and it was just about managable.You have to be careful how you position it or it becomes a bit unstable.It does work a treat with smaller camera combos though.I personally wouldn't buy anything less than the zoom model.
The "focus" is probably the most useful model to buy but is also a lot more expensive.I might actually be selling a zoom model next week if you are still looking for one.

So the normal can only attach to the tripod mount but the zoom can attach to the lens collar or the normal screw mount?

Oh and I keep my eye on the classifieds so I'll take a look if you do put it up for sale :)

trek tech t'pod have a look at that - I have one its small enough to fit into any camera bag - even done a review on it at Amazon...

Holds my gripped D700 & nikon 70-200 VRII without any hassle's..

Hi Ryan

The tripod mount on the camera is exactly the same as a tripod mount on a lens collar so you can attatch either to the GPod.
I've also used the Trek Tech pod and it's more sturdy than the GPod but nowhere near as versatile.
I took this last weekend in Edinburgh with the GPod wrapped around the top of a chair.

I actually used the GPod 5 times as much as my tripod over the weekend.It's great to have something so small and light that you can carry all the time.It's definitely not a substitute for a proper tripod though.

i had a g'pod zoom with QR ball head. whilst the pod itself is great the head is naff....imvho

i replaced it with a manfrotto head not QR, worked fine after that

Has anyone had any experience with Hama tripods? They have excellent reviews on amazon and are extremely cheap. I was thinking of getting one and seeing how much I use it before investing in a better more expensive tripod, is this a good idea?

Don't buy one. ... I had 2 and they were both useless. One broke, and the other couldnt handle the weight of my 1000D and Tokina 11-16.

One of these with the centre column from a tripod is much better.

I was looking at getting a clamp but i can imagine myself finding somewhere where there's no where to put it on and thats why i was looking at the tripod route. Could anyone reccomend me a cheap tripod then? i don't want to do anything fancy with it, all i want to do is hold the camera landscape for long exposures etc absolute Max £50 but anyhting lower would be excellent :)

You did say you would consider "anything" which is why suggestions for clamps.

Ebay, shudders, but to be honest you are going to get the best there for that, anything new for that isn't worth having.

Don't underestimate the quality of older pods, my Unilok is 18 years old and will last another 50+

Haha you say nothing fancy but actually for what you want to use it for you really need a good as tripod as you can get! If you want sharp pictures you'll need a good one. Having said that I may be flogging my old Manfrotto, ill let. you know if I decide to sell tonight or tomorrow. Its quite light, and comes with a ball head. I would say it would fit your bill perfectly, and I think it's pretty sturdy considering it didn't cost ££££'s!
 
I was thinking second hand maybe my best option but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in a tripod?
