Hass anyone used or got a Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom Tripod plus Ball and Socket Head?

I'm wondering what you think of it and also would it support a Nikon D700 with a 105 macro lens or maybe a 24-70 lens?

I like the idea of this, but I really want to hear your feedback first, the real pro's and cons :thumbs:

£6 ... wow. I think i would be worried sick risking my set up on a £6 ebay jobby :nuts:

I bought the SLR Zoom version + Manfrotto ball head initially for my little Panny FZ28...perhaps a bit over kill.

However I think over time the leg segments do seem to get a bit weaker and I wouldn't be that happy using it with my 7D and my 85mm. Maybe wrapped around a tree or fence though?
 
I've used the slr zoom quite a lot and it's an ok piece of kit.I've used it with 5D2/7D and lenses upto 24-105L.It's ok with that combo but you have to be careful how you position the legs.At really funny angles it can become unstable but used straight I never had a problem.
Never had any problems with the leg sections becoming loose.

Drop me a pm if you are buying one.I have a spare that I might be tempted to sell now that I have also picked up a SLR Focus.

I got a cheapy copy from the bay and added the ballhead I got with the Redsnapper monopod.

This gives you an idea of what it can hold and I also used it last week on a hand rail in pretty wobbly conditions 5 floors up as shown in this thread.


However your equipment is a lot more expensive than mine and if it was me I don't think I can trust it enough!

Is it usable without the head?
 
No I'm looking at the Focus edition. Now to find at decent ball head !!

Yes. But you're very limited.

The ball head makes it so much easier to move the camera itself into various positions, once you've established the basic pod structure you want.

Re; the Gorillapod - I wouldn't use a DSLR without a ball head.
 
I have one, but almost never use it. I much prefer the versatility of a proper tripod. It does has it's very specific uses, though.
 
Ok ... after reading a few reviews, I've decided on the Focus.

Now ... what i need now is a decent manfrotto ball head. If I'm going to get one, i want one to also use on my tripod as well, not just a cheap one. Im looking at the Manfrotto 498RC4. Anyone used or got one who could give me a heads up?
 
I have a chinese copy, and a manfroto 494 rc2 on top of it.

I have had the gripped 500D with both 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8IS with a 580EX2 on top. wrapped arround fence posts, ladders, a door handle and tree branches no problems.

They aren't the easiest of thing to get positioned and be secure on some things so the ball head is a huge help when it comes to positioning.
