Have any of you used the Joby Gorillapods? If you have, what do you think of them? I'm wondering if one would be useful for close up shots, e.g of plated up food, especially as their heads are so flexible?

I've got a gorillapod, although its a china cheapy job from ebay.
Great things and I got a cheap remote for mine, although it isn't a two stop so doesn't autofocus
Only issue is getting it so horizons are level. If its a picture off a tree and the angle will add to the effect it doesn't matter, but because each leg can bend in so many ways getting a level picture can be a pain sometimes.
Definitely worth having though, mine lives in my rucksack

I've got one, but don't use it nearly as much as my regular tripod and they are quite expensive for what they do. I've got a ball head on mine, which really makes it quite a nifty little weapon. Rednapper make good (conventional) tripods at very reasonable money.
Gorillapod can over balance if you are using it just as a small tripod, but will be okay if you don't have a long lens and you stand it so one leg is directly under the lens to take the weight. No need for a cable release, just set the 2-secs self timer - that's what it's for.
After all that, if you are thinking of shooting table top food, one of the larger gorillapods might be just the thing.

Hoppy I was thinking the same thing about the 2 second release, which I always use anyway when using my 'regular tripod'.
Because of my rather complicated (and small) kitchen layout I struggle to get my tripod just where I want it and thought the gorillapod might just sort that problem out as I could put it on the worktop next to what I need to photograph.

Gorillapod sounds perfect for you. I've just tried it with my 40D and kit lens, which I think you've just got? Goes really close and focal length range seems perfect for foodyness.
Mine is the Zoom version, with Manfrotto 484 ball head. Looks spot on, but maybe the larger Focus version would be better - goes higher and more able to straddle the plates? Thinking about it, that's the one I would go for - you'll need a bit of height looking down on stuff. Quite a bit more money though. Not seen one of the Chinese copies, but prolly worth a look.

I was going to buy that lens but my dad has very generously bought me the 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM instead
I was looking to buy the focus, it looks the most stable. Don't mind spending the cash so long as the product lasts and is suitable, buy cheap buy twice as my gran would say

Focus should be fine. I use the SLR Zoom with a 486 Ball head with my D700 and 24-70 f/2.8. You will need to use a remote (or a 10 second timer) to avoid too much vibration. BTW, I find that the 'pod is much more stable wrapped around something than when freestanding.

Oh yes, I think you posted about the 17-85. Great walkabout lens. If it doesn't go quite close enough for detailed stuff, put a Hoya +1 dioptre close up lens on it - cheapest way.
Can we see this please? Grilled lobster (thermidore optional) with salad (fries optional). Pear and almond bakewell flan, fresh raspberries on top and clotted cream, with chocolate eclairs. Thank you

I have my 55-250 lens too so between the two I should have pretty much all my outdoor stuff covered (for the moment at least)
Grilled lobster possible as I bought plenty last week in Norfolk (freezer well stocked up).
Bakewell tart already on my blog but a rhubarb version as are choc eclairs.
