Joomula, Drupal, Woodpress - explain

OK I know they are CMS, I know they need to be installed on your web server with access to SQL (mysql?) and PHP and that is about it.

My question's are, are they all the same, which on is better (OK personal preference I guess)? does one do certain things better than the other?

Any useful link, tutorial or other related sites??

In answer to the question I use Joomla, no particular reason, just it seemed easier at the time :$

To answer the question with any sense, we will want to know what the OP wants to get out of thier website. The question at the moment is a bit like "motorcycles and trucks are vehicals, which drive on the road, and may require deisel" which one is best?

i use joomla extensively, and ive been dabbling with wordpress with nextgen, both seem pretty good but joomla is great once you get the hang of it, and dont mind IE giving it cramps...
 
I started by playing around with Joomla, I didn't get too far with it though. In the end I opted for wordpress along with nextgen gallery.

look at yet another photoblog plugin YAPB
it's pretty good for single photo posts
 
Wordpress is blog based and has a 5 minute install process.
- Aimed at blogers but can have e-commerce intergrated but wouldn't suggest it, WP is free under the GPL.

Joomla/Drupal are more of a user interactive and very flexable with regards to content, Again this is free to use. Virtumart intergrates very well with joomla, but plugins and themes seem more to be a paid area compared to WP.

My personal experience with joomla is limited but seems to be a lot just to make just one page how you want it. Could be wrong as thats just my inital experience.

Wordpress i find score very well in SERPS and SEO, Spam plugin is required, there are lots of themes, plugins, galleries, Gallery2 intergrates fantastic, Majority is free, look around for themes as people do tend to sell the free stuff.

Both run PHP and a basic knowledge of html is need if you want to move things about.

Final thoughts. WP for blogging, gallerys etc, Joomla if you want a fully blown CMS with lots of user interaction, eg polls,Forum,Shops,

Both will work with google analytics and webmaster tools

Any advice on install give us a shout.

I have no intention of running a forum, polls or a shop, I only want basic web site but with ease for other users to just upload a report type thing, so wordpress may fill my needs

I have three web sites (all run from the same hosting package) will I need to run three installs of wordpress or just the one?? I would also want some form or picture gallery but I have two requirements, one that blocks people from clicking on the image and downloading (but not flash based) and secondly, will the one gallery program allow me to setup three separate galleries for my three web sites??

I use wordpress and joomla (even written plugins for both). It does really depend on what you want you site to be. from the sounds of it, wordpress will better fit your needs
 
Not a mention of Pixelpost?? ... I use it and like it, does what I need :)
 
yes pp is good and indeed has it's place, again it depends largely on what the OP wants to do. If its just run a gallery with a couple of rarely changing text pages PP will do nicely.

Web site 2 is a personal (the wifes) semi blog, semi here some pictures I took type of site. I would like her to get into the habit of adding and updating part of her web site herself., has 2 photo gallery (currently hosted off site)

Web site 3 is an informational web site, may get updated once a year, has a photo gallery (currently hosted off site), might require other to update if it becomes popular.

I have been looking at wordpress and pixelpost as well, but when I checked today about MYSQL with my web host they told me I will have to pay for this about £50 a year, does this seem right?

Joomla is possibly the best bet for this site, especially as it is now possible to integrate gallery 2 into it

Sounds like Joomla wil be your best bet ont his one, posibly with some form of UAC, the diffulculty for you is the features you need wont be exploited, and Joomla may be overkill. You need to evaluate the amount of access to add content "others" will need

If you are felling like making the job harder, use Drupal instead of Joomla

That seems expensive. There many hosts offering a lot more for less

You might want to point out to them that mysql is avail for free here: http://www.mysql.com/

Essentially all the host are providing is a small bit of hard drive space on a server and some open source software

You make a reasonable but myopic point

Joomla and Drupal are equally easy installs, allong with Gallery 2, virtuemart, Coppermine, Expression engine and most other packages

Thats not the point though. From install to commecially viable product, in all cases the work required can be anything form 1/2 days work to several months work, depending on the required finished result
