JPEG Only To Speed Up Lightroom?

Firstly, Merry (belated) Christmas

I was thinking, with 20-30,000 photos my Lightroom (on Mac), my poor Lightroom/iMac setup was running a little slow for my liking, even with the previews set at low resolution.

Looking over the most recent shoot i've done, of a burlesque dancer, I noticed Lightroom had imported the RAW file and not the JPEG (like I have it set to) but that the RAW files take longer to load due to their file size and are (as you would expect) unedited. Personally I do all of my editing in Photoshop and then export JPEGs as finished images for the customer and reference.

Therefore i've now gone to Lightroom and deleted the entire catalogue, gone to finder and set up a smart search to pull only the JPEG files from the catalogue (the main folder of clients) and then dragged the results into Lightroom. This will only import JPEGs and in theory make things at least a bit quicker to load up.

I know I could have multiple catalogues on Lightroom etc but I prefer everything in one place.

Hope this little tip helps and if anyone can see any flaws in my suggestion please feel free to correct me :D

thanks

Dan

Can I ask why you import your files into Lightroom at all, jpeg or otherwise? Lightroom, if it is anything, is a tool for enhancing images and that is best done working on the RAW image.

I don't understand why people like to keep their entire collection of photos in Lightroom.. it isn't healthy on your computer!

I only keep what I'm working on, loaded in Lightroom, and optimise the catalogue every few days. Then everything I've done with is put into my back up system. It's not all that often I need to dig something out, and when I do it's easy enough as it's all properly organised :)

i use it to catalogue and have a 'best of' which is 5* flagged images, so say 5 or so from every shoot that i really like go in here to give me a place to pull portfolio images from easily without sifting through shoots.

Does anyone with a Mac know how I could add in 'does not include' into a search, as I keep the watermarked images (excessive I know) and would like in my lightroom a search set up so it gets the JPEGs but excludes any with '-wm' at the end of the file name.

Can't see it in the options, cheers

EDIT - got it, hold down Option and it gives you negative conditions, so i just added 'None of the folowing are true' 'contains -wm'

Errrm because its a cataloging and selection application?

The editing bit is really a secondary function - and thats completely obvious from the way that the editing bit is only moving on in later versions.

I use Lightroom for cataloging, tagging and selecting and the editing is done in Photoshop (because its far more flexible than Lightroom, but equally Adobe Bridge is not as good as Lightroom).

Desantnik, that's what i thought. I see it as basically a more comprehensive version of Adobe Bridge with everything built in; retouching, cataloguing, web apps, slide show options....

Like you say, LR is only so good for retouching; anything major like advanced cloning and that's a job for PS, which is infinitely a much more user friendly program for that kind of thing.

Because thats what it does?? and its the best at it too...:p
