Jump from 500d Dilemma

Hi Guys,

I am looking to upgrade from my 500d. The low light performance slow focus is making me want to upgrade. in fact if its a murky day I don't ever want to go out with it due to low light performance.

I enjoy a varied range of photography but mostly wildlife/landscapes and Motorsports.

I would like to jump to full frame and have the $$ saved to move into a 5dmk3 however I am stuck wondering if I should wait for the 7dmk2 to be announced (any ideas when?) Which I would expect would be cheaper than the mk3 but more than the 6d.

If i was to go for the 5d Mk 3 would it be a good idea to go for the kit with the 24 to 105mm? I Would need a replacement lens as a walk about due to the change in mounts.

I know the jump from a 500d to a 5d would be a huge change in IQ and performance overall however a recent discussion around crop vs full frame and pixels on target made me wonder if I should stick with Crop.

What would you guys do?

Do you have the money saved up for a decent lens to go with the body? if not, you would do better to look at a mk2 and save some money and get a lens. :)

Personally i'd take advantage of all the wedding togs offloading their mk2's for mk3's and get a second hand mk2 and buy some lens power.
 
I'd go for the 5d mk3 and 24-105.
I have a 5d mk2 and 7d and the mk3 is the best of both (with other improvements) in one body so if you can afford it I'd say go for it.

You could hang on for the 7d2, but it could be a long wait. :)

5D mark 3 and 24-105mm would be great. The 24-105 is a fantastic lens, only the 24-70 f2.8 II or prime lenses are are sharper than this.
 
I came from a 500D myself, if in your shoes I'd go for the 5D3 kit and if there was any cash left over and you haven't got one then put it toward either a 300mm F4 or 400mm F5.6
 
I purchased a 5D2 s/h last year and do similar photography to you. I'm thinking of moving to a 5D mk3 now. Better focusing and fps on the 5D mk3, and from what I've seen better high ISO performance.
Also agree with the others 24-105 is a great lens, I've got one and it my walk about lens.

Hi Guys thanks for the advice.

I have a Sigma 150-500mm which I love for my tele end so that no worries.

if anything I want something at the wider end (10MM or smaller)

I'm not really a lover of standard zooms and even less of a lover of f4 standard zooms. If pushed along the road of standard zooms I'd be looking at f2.8's and would only look at f4's after much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

If thats the case then just get the body + 35mm + 10-22 zoom.

35mm's a great walk about lens and the 10-22 covers your wide end for landscapes.

The 10-22 is an EF-S lens isn't it, or am I missing something? It is early...

It is EFS and unfortunately you won't be able to use that...
 
I've gone from 300D > 30D > 60D > 5Dmk3. The only thing I'd really suggest is to make sure you've got some nice lenses to use with the 5Dmk3. I've actually given my 'lesser' lenses to my dad and sister now, but even with the Sigma 12-24 I noticed that the full frame REALLY shows up any flaws in the lens (softness in corners, etc). Oh and regarding the previous mention of 10mm being ridiculously wide, the Sigma I have at 12mm on FF is madness. I'm almost in shot :D

I can imagine nothing worse than getting a camera upgrade only to find you suddenly don't have the performance with the lenses you used to expect, and having to shell out a load more cash on lenses, or at worst not having the money to do so. The only lens I had that was still nice on the 5Dmk3 was the 50mm 1.8.
