I've just ordered a canon 350d to try my hand at dslr photography. I think I got a relatively good deal, camera, lens, 2 filters, spare battery, memory card and canon bag for £190 delivered. I plan on taking pictures of landscapes, portraits and some at the motocross. My question is, what lens/lenses would you recommend I buy. It comes with 18-55mm.
 
How close can you get to the motocross and what is your budget, a 70-200 or possibly longer if you can't get close to the action. This was with a 150-500 at Silverstone @500

If you want to have a go at landscapes, and motorsport (especially if you want to try panning) a tripod would be remarkably useful :thumbs:

For motorsport, a tripod would be a hindrance rather being useful. You are far, far better off handholding. If you look at the professionals shooting motorsports they either handhold or use a monopod if they are using a large, heavy lenses.

Ah fair enough, I thought tripods were preferred for motorsports, but Ive never done it myself. I stand corrected :)

As Ken said, what is your budget ?

If you are on a tight budget, the Canon 55-250IS is a cracker of a lens to look at for the price. Then you have the Canon 70-300IS which is very nice. You can then jump up from there ...

I've used the 55-250 IS for just about everything. I long walkaround, wildlife including birds in flight, a bit of sport and car racing and pertraits and although it's not the fastest lens it gives great IQ and has good AF tracking. The only problem with mine is the wife nicked it when I gave her my 550D when I got my 5D2 so I hardly ever get to use it now.
