after reading lots of reviews and looking on the forum ive just bought a really nice as new D200 body, one owner from new with a shutter count of just 4000 comes with all original bits and bobs battery leads software etc plus 4g memory card all for £360 delivered.

Thinks thats a pretty good price (hope so lol) looking forward to getting my hands on it now, should be here in a few days.

was a toss up between a D200 or D80 but with the price being so close on them now days was rude not to buy the D200 and will be putting my 50mm f1.8 on it for starters that i bought last week from the sale section here, and have a feeling there be some more glass to follow very shortly :cool:
 
Good camera and a good price too - I started my Nikon DSLR life with one of these, great piece of kit. :)

You've made the right decision in terms of build quality over the D80 (although the D80 is good). The only thing you may find is the rubber around the front thumbwheel (where the red flash is) can come a little loose.... nothing that a bit of glue won't fix :)

Focus is good, IQ is very good (especially in raw) and don't listen to the naysayers; ISO 800 isn't horrific. :)
 
I thought of the D200 as my first "proper" DSLR ( no scene modes or auto!) I loved it and it taught me a lot about exposures and other settings.
It stayed with me for about 6 months before I succumbed to a D300.
Its a great camera, enjoy it

very nice camera, but I can't live without todays tech (LV, video etc!) so getting rid of mine!
 
im not fussed about having the latest must have gizmo when it cost so much for a new camera of a similar spec not fussed about video either, the 200 will be more than enough for me for now, long as its capable of taking nice shots (and i know it is) then ill be happy with it. i do also want to learn more about exposure so wanted to get away from a camera with all the scene modes so the 200 fitted that bill too, plus i believe its got top notch build quality and feels nice and solid in the hand so yeah will work for me until i learn more and feel the need to upgrade and then i dout ill loose much on the price over what i paid for it so it will give me a nice chunk of money towards my next one, maybe a 300 or 300s :)
 
As a long time D200 user (4 years and counting!) I will give you a big thumbs up :)

just need to have a think on glass, i have a nifty fifty already waiting so could do with a more general purpose lens, im thinking an 18-70?

good choice i now have 3 of these and cant fault them cheap as chips nowadays and can stand up to a few knocks ........if you can run to it get a 17-55 2.8 fantastic walkabout lens (if a little short) iq is wonderful and is very fast .......seen one in grays at below retail and i think there is one in the classifieds 360 for a camera whit that low a count is a great buy

I kitted mine with an 18-70.... great lens for the money (especially used these days). 17-55 is nice though, although the Tamron 17-50 is a great alternative if you don't have the dosh.

Love my D200. Plenty good enough for me. I love that I can use non-CPU lenses, but still get auto exposure, and that I can lock the mirror up, and that I can use a wired remote and, and...
 
I have a D200 too, and find it a good camera. A good combination I have an 18-200 DX lens attatched to it too. You got a good deal there I think.

I used to have a D200 as well but the battery drainage was heavy, a well known problem.
I did upgrade to the D300 which to my mind is one of Nikons best cameras they have produced to date in the non full frame versions. There is a huge difference between the D200 and D300, too many to list on here.

Strange you say about the battery drain. I thought it was very good on my D200. Maybe I am not taking enough photos "eh".
 
Best answer is to fit a grip with two batteries ;)
Unlike some, the grip looks like it should be there too, rather than an add-on. Feels better in the hand too if you have anything bigger than small hands.
 
its arrived..

certainly is in pristine condition, only thing is the manual is not in English? it does have a quick start guide that is in English along with the software disc and original warranty card etc also in English. Manual has "Guia Nikon de fotografia digital para la" along with D200.


battery time should be ok as has two original Nikons with it, going to have to sort a walkabout lens asap think ill go for the 18-70 as seems very well priced..
 
I used to get about 450 shots per charge, maybe more if I didn't chimp. Hanhel ones were pretty good 3rd party options; HK ones were varied....
 
Have a look here for manuals mate.

Had mine for around 3 years and love it! build quality is great, bulletproof. I'm only JUST starting to want something with better high ISO performance, but barring the pro cameras dont think there is anything to warrant swapping it for just yet (D400? hurry up Nikon!)
 
I wish I hadn't sold my18-70 mm lens it was really good. I have seen some advertised but with dust specks inside the lens so watch out for that. Now have the 24-120mm G VR lens instead. Cost more but was my main walkabout lens on my trip to the USA recently. Oh by the way be very careful when changing lenses its very easy to get dust on the sensor and it doesn't have the self clean as in the D300

ive had a play around and im getting to grips with it (going to take some time), is there a full manual mode?

im currently holding the mode button down and turning the rear wheel from M-A theres other settings but not sure about them yet a P and a S, but even on the A mode its not full auto as far as i can tell, just changes shutter speed as i adjust the f number?
 
There certainly is manual. It's M.

A is aperture priority, you adjust aperture, camera adjusts shutter.

S is shutter priority, you do shutter, camera does aperture

P is program, camera gives you what it thinks is the ideal shutter and ap settings. Basically auto.

sorry i meant full auto lol, so thats the P setting as you say..

makes sense now, ive been mostly playing with manual anyway as want to be able to work the settings out myself :) in 20-30 years lol


loving the camera though, just feels quality in the hand

Just got rid of my D200. Anyone interested in a nikon MB-D200 battery pack? Comes with the AA adaptor, an original nikon and an after market battery. Offers?
 
"A" mode is generally recommended for most situations with "S" mode for fast moving subjects. Low ISO settings are preferred to prevent graining in the photos.

This may give you a couple of general pointers to get started with, obviously you have the options of "M" mode which lets you set the camera up to your desire.
