Just bought a D700

Picked up a very low clicks D700 on here from Nawty - new condition … been thinking about getting one for some time but wanted a really good one …..

Has thrown my Nikon wide lens needs into confusion as I had just bought a 12 24 f4 DX lens …….. for my DX body …….

very pleased with the D700

first few shots confirmed the sneaky suspicion that I always had - my D7100 may be up for sale soon

The D700 just feels "so right" - like my D300 and the IQ and colours are very good (and) high ISO seems to beat the D7100, (which is one of the attributes that I wanted)

Early days but very pleased ……….. try it with a few bird shots when the cloud lifts

I will be interested in your conclusions,i have the D7000 and had a secondhand D700 on loan for few days,its a fantastic camera and it was with a fair amount of regret i returned it and added a D7100 to my stable.The main reason i returned it was my longest birding lens is 400mm and i often end up with a large crop,i felt this would not be using a D700 to its best.
Not sorry i bought the D7100 its a great camera but my brief affair with the D700 is still with me ;)

I am interested in bird and wildlife photography and expected I needed to continue with the DX crop for that …… my longest lens is a 300mm f2.8 but I have a TC20lll ……. I thought that the D7100 would be a lot better at higher ISO's than the D300, and it probably is.
I do not think that the same goes for the D7100 v D700 comparison - but I have only taken 20 or 30 comparison shots so far, (I got the D700 last night).

Ideally I wanted a "D400" as I really like the UI versus the D7100, (the UI on the D7100 still feels strange to me), the UI on the D700 and the D300 are the same.
The D800E is too expensive and I do not want to go "there" as I would rather put the money towards a 500mm

All reports say that the D7100 is "better" than the D700 - no idea if this is true

If you can utilize the FF on a D700 then my money is on that being great,i just didn't want to take the gamble on cropped results not satisfying me.

If it is relevant

If you look at the cropped x 1.3 mode on the D7100 and compare it with the full DX mode you will see that there is no point using the cropped x 1.3 mode apart from smaller files sizes and an increase in click speeds per minute - that's my take anyway for comparing them - I never use the x 1.3 crop mode these days

I probably knew this anyway as an in camera digital crop is just like a PP crop of the full image

but with the D7100 v the D800 you get a greater pixel density on the D7100 - i.e. more pixels per square mm image … so it is all totally confusing in theory anyway

Hi I have the D300 and have, this year progressed to the D700 (a low mileage one) and i love it.
It has been a bit of a struggle moving up to FX lenses but then Lenses are always an investment (Thats what i told SWIMBO) but i still cant let go of my 300 though.
I wasnt sure that FX would improve my photography but it has.... Sorry i cant compair the 7100 for you.
The Low light performance of the D700 is really excellent!

Enjoy the 700 its a brillent camera!
 
My use of the 1.3crop is purely for longer continues shooting ie birds in flight,cant say it actually shoots much faster but it does run for longer,if there had been any chance of me buying lenses to suit then the 700 would be in my bag.

Actually i have been here before when i swapped all my 35mm gear for roll film and found i was getting the same size image on a bigger slide ;)
