So, finally, today my new D7000 arrived after alot of hassle with the courier company! Anyway, nightmare over...IT'S HERE:clap:

I've just opened the box, gave it a little charge, wacked the battery and a memory card in and yeah. Wow. It's so different compared to my D3000. It's bigger, heavier, nicer to hold. All the different controls and buttons have dazzled me and I'm in this other world totally lost and not even knowing how to set my apenture and shutter speed to how I want it to be! Manual reading time tonight and of course a lot of youtube videos!

It's so different than my d3000 and are there any tips out there? :love:
 
Does the 3000 not have command and sub wheels? The only thing that throws me when I use my 7000 is the zoom function when viewing images on the LCD

What I do is ignore the manual, play with everything! And only revert to the manual when I know what I'm looking for, as they're so thick. Like novels! I've not looked at my D800 manual once.
 
ALWAYS read the manual - the PDF version is always better IMO as can be sitting there ready for use while you are playing - the 7000 has soooooo many features its a shame to miss out by not Reading the FM.
 
Hey guys..

yeah, the d3000 has a command wheel etc, I guess after having it for a year im so used to it. I think i've figured out a bit more the d7000 though when im changing to shutter and aperture it seems really slow?? and then suddenly goes back to it wants to do despite me shoving it on manual...:cuckoo:
 
What mode have you set it to? In manual mode it shouldn't change anything without you manually doing so. You must be in one of the other P,A,S modes?

I never have, never will, no matter what it is I buy, read the manual. Tv, stereo, phone, camera ... you can usually figure it out without reading the tiny print. I see a manual as more a reference. But by all means, if you get stuck, use it. It's more fun my way though

I'm still in love with mine. I moved in similar way to yourself (D3100)

THere's a few good videos on You Tube. Just do a search.
 
Hi and welcome to the club, there is an owners thread here, long thread but some great tips and advice.

I found the best way was to play, play and play some more. Lots of custom stuff to fettle with the nrefer to the manual when you scratch your head.

Hahaha, I THOUGHT I had it on manual mode, but *cough* after double checking....that wasnt the case. Figured that out, too!!

Now, for the focusing. It's seeming pretty difficult even on auto. It seems to go crazy. It's so different and I am quite lost, though....i'll be joining you, no manual reading ;)

I've been fiddling and looking at youtube videos and the one and only thing that has stumped me is the focusing. Say, for example, I want to focus on my cat. The (what I can only describe as red dots) go to the side of the cat suddenly and move around the shot exactly where I dont want the focus to be. :(

Set it to af-c, Spot focusing & centre weighted metering.
 
I also went from a D3000 to a D7000 and like you say it's a big jump! I think lots of practice is the best solution!

I have to say reading the user thread referenced above is worth while.

You need to use either 3d tracking or AF-S, focus and recompose, you will also need to set it to fire the shutter either in focus or not. It's a beast to tame if you're not used to the many options, first thing to use and get used to using is back button focussing, take your time, find how things best work for you :thumbs:
 
Did you get a hardcopy/paper manual? I didn't, so when I rushed straight out with mine I was completely flummoxed for about half an hour :D
