Just got refused a job because I'm British

The whole thing sounds like blatant discrimination, and I'm guessing the employer didn't even think about this, or assumed it didn't apply to a 'casual' advert? They obviously don't know much about labour law either, or they'd never have sent the reply the OP described. We all know that employers have various ways and means of getting the employee they want, and it's hard to prove that they broke the law in most cases.

I suppose you could go after them, but I doubt if it's worth the trouble.

well i am about to go out there to set up a car washing empire, as my thinking is they are all over here doing it, so must be an opportunity there.

There is. There is also a lot of folk just like you who are moving to other countries to find work. Why wouldn't you? If you're desperate to find work you need to look for it. It's not going to come to you. We're in desperate times here and unfortunately you can't be too choosy now when it comes to what, when and where.

Also I find it hilarious that there are folk here who seem upset that immigrants are coming over here and setting up businesses as if they have no right. You can't set up a business too? Stop being so flipping lazy, get off your arse and go find work. Can't find work? Start a business! So much help going. Tax breaks if you set up a business in areas of depravation for example. New businesses are what is going to pull this country out of recession.

Indeedio. Have to say all of the immigrants we have in our warehouse are much harder working than their local counterparts. Youll hear the same from anyone else that works with them too.

Isn't it discrimination based on something you can't change though? She could always wash the dye out but then are we talking about a few highlights or....

What a ridiculous generalisation :shake: Reads to me like you are saying all the immigrants and you? think the English are lazy? ..... Definitely racist IMHO :cautious:

Wasn't there a comedy sketch on tv a year or two ago about a bunch of builders sitting in a pub on a wednesday afternoon (the clock deliberatly shown in the background said 3pm) And they were all complaining about how the polish are stealing all their work. Then the bosses mobile goes off and while dunking his 3rd pint blasts "bloody client, keeps calling me all the time, I'm gonna turn this damn thing off soon." then continues to moan that if the work continues to dry up they will only get a 3 hour lunchbreak.

The English counterparts that I've dealt with in the same roles in our warehouse, and people I know who work with immigrants all say the immigrants are harder working. is that a little clearer?

Yup! .... it was comedy sketch...

'Till death do us part' was better though.

that basically means we are being racist about ourselves which makes no sense

Yup! definitely even more racist..

Huh?

Sounds more like Neil is just stating a fact. He's not saying they are harder working because they are foreign but simply that the hard working ones just so happen to be foreign.

Stop trying to make it something that it's not.

Have to agree with neil on this. Whenever I have come across anyone working any job in this country from a labour point of view they are always much harder working than their english counterparts.

personally im not sure how being english myself i can be "racist" to other english persons

well, you could. You aren't being here. But you could still be racist, it's irrelevant your own skin colour etc.

I find it easier to hate everyone equally and technically speaking that can't be racist either! :p

Piercings, tattoo's, dyed hair etc are personal choices, so if you personally chose to have them I can personally choose not to employ you.

You cant control were you were born, the colour of your skin, your sexual orientation, or what age you are. There is an argument that your religion is a personal choice (although not in the eyes of the law.) so you can not be discriminated against on those grounds.

Lol - Ive been in my 'early thirties' for several years and dont intend on moving from that for some time to come (i'm alledgedly 39)

You best hold onto that as after 40 it's all downhill!! lol

I got told that by an ambulance driver when I reached 40 and ever since then I've had continual minor "aging" ailments ...I'm darned sure he jinxed me!!! lol

No it isn't. Many, many companies will have rules on appearance

A

Totally agree with you.
I have worked for Sainsburys for over 20yrs. Their policy on appearance has become more lenient over the years.
Here are a few examples.
When I first started with the company, men couldn't have tatoos or pierced ears and they had to be clean shaven.
Women could only have one earing in each ear and no dyed hair other than natural colours (to cover the grey:LOL:).
We also had to wear tights all year round no matter how hot it was and were not allowed to wear trousers.
These rules were there to set a high standard in appearance and not to discriminate.
Since we have become a more multi cultural country changes have been made so as not to disciminate against people of different beliefs. ie men are now allowed beards and women are allowed to wear trousers.
Unfortunately there are still too many people that assume that if you look a certain way then you are going to act a certain way too.
If you've got the choice of applicant it is obvious that you will choose not only the one that is best for the job but one that conforms to your standard of appearance.

I dunno - depends on the business - if you wanted to open an 'escort agency' an area of depravation would be ideal

If I was hiring and someone came dressed as in the left image I probably wouldn't hire them. Not because of the tattoos but because of a lack of respect for the interview process. How one presents themselves to others in that situation is a good indication of their character.

check your household insurance, if you have legal cover included, make a claim that way. wont cost you a penny.

I like that doctor image, I think it's the old case of book and cover.

Well not until your renewal premium anyway :D

shouldnt then either...legal expense insurance is usually backed off to a 3rd party like DAS so its a set fee.

I think thats more of a case of seeing him out in the street, not going for an interview. That said if florence nightingale was around today, she probably wouldn't get hired either, becasue she had a mental condition. Didn't do her or her career any harm

if someone came for an interview dressed as a doctor, I'd think he was nuts!
even if it was for a doctor's job!!!

Arch where are you based? If you do want to name and shame them and try make it clear this practice isn't acceptable send me a message. I work for the national papers.

Love the photo.
Certainly proves that people shouldn't judge others on their appearance alone. Unfortunately a lot of people do.
