Just had a fright

Swapped the 50 for my 17-55 and it started to rattle every time I moved the plane of the camera fired a few random test shots and all seemed ok. Shook the camera, and it rattled like made. Started to panic a bit by now, as it sounded like there was a bunch of ball bearings floating about inside the lens. Then all of a bloody sudden a little bag of silica gell fell out of the lens hood Damn I felt silly, relieved, but silly.

So the moral of this is check for extraneous items before panicing

It's easy to laugh at you but we all know the feeling of sheer terror when we think one of our beloved toys is failing. At least I do, it's expensive stuff and I've had to work hard to pay for it!

Yep, that's what threw me totally. The hood on a 17-55 is pretty big, and it must have just got lodged inbetween the hood and lens It was reverse mounted at the time.
