Just how good is the Canon 70-200mm F4 L non IS?

Hi Guys

I am thinking of getting a news lens to go with my EOS 70D . I'm looking at the Canon 70-200mm F4 L non IS version. Can't stretch to the IS version.
So just how good is this lens, in particular the IQ and build quality.

The other option would be a 70-300 in the same price bracket.

Any advise is very welcome

It's not as good as the IS version but lots better than the 70-300
 
Best thing I ever bought for my 40d, Gone over to Micro 4/3 now, so reluctantly selling it after much deliberation.
Tried it on my E-PL5 with adapter, it worked fine but looked bloody ridiculous and defeated the object of going lighter and smaller!
Go for it, you wont regret it!
 
awesome lens with crystal clear pin sharp images..wish i still had mine. my current 70-300 sigma apo dg doesnt even come halfway close in comparison and at 200ml on the L lens its still relatively easy to get handheld shots pin sharp.
wish i could afford to get one again. would quite happily sell my 70-300 and my 18-135 STM if i knew i could raise enough rom those two for a second hand 70-200L.
 
Thanks guys, just confirmed what I thought, looks like I will be getting one shortly.
 
I own both the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM Lens and the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens.
providing you do not need the extra reach the 70-200 runs rings around the 70-300 both mechanically and IQ wise.

It is a very good lens especially in reasonable light levels or if you can shoot long exposures.
 
Remember comparing the 70-200mm f4 IS and non-IS version and the only significant differences I could see on a 5D were that the IS version was slightly sharper at 200mm and the non-IS version had to be stopped down to f8 at 70mm to give edge-to-edge sharpness on a full frame body. Otherwise both superbly sharp, the IS at all apertures and focal lengths.

Lack of IS noticeable at 200mm, especially on a crop sensor.
 
Also agree that 70-200mm either L better than 70-300mm IS USM non-IS version, especially on a full frame. The 70-200mm and 70-300mm L versions much more comparable IQ-wise over overlapping focal lengths.
 
I had the 70-200 F4 non IS and it was a belter of a lens and certainly one I would recommend (and have done lots of times)

The Canon 70-300 L lens also gets very good reviews and a following and worth a look at, but it is about twice the price...
 
I think I'm more or less decided to get one. I had thought about the 70-300 IS L, but it is way out of my price range at the moment. I really appreciate all of the advice given. Cheers chaps.
