Just how weatherproof is the 5d iii?

I've taken the plunge and ordered a 5d iii from paramoz.

But want to know how much I can trust the weather sealing? In British rain am I likely to get into problems.

Please don't take this in the wrong way, but I'm looking from what people think who own it rather than being given links to reviews about it.

I only wonder as I want to know if I can rely on it to survive being used in a boyish winter.

In torrential rain I'd be using some kind of cover no matter what, but with the correct lens and a filter, it is 'weather sealed' so your average rain should be fine. Just dry it off.

Cool. After googling some horror stories I was worried. I am trying to build my lenses around all being weathersealed. I suppose if I'm worried about it I should just buy some insturance. I certainly don't worry about my iPhone 5 in the rain and I assume that has less protection.

So did a camera stop working when it was dropped in a lake or when I used it when it was raining?

And just for those who can't tell - that's a joke. For the sake of a camera I would not risk my livelihood and liberty. However I would look at what level of cover would be required to cover this.

I've quite happily used my 5Diii in fairly heavy rain for about 20/30 mins without worrying about it at all. As long as you have a weathersealed L lens on then you should be fine.

Just ensure that you always dry the camera as best you can as soon as you can.

Different bit of kit but I know of a 580exII flash that went in a lake and was fully submerged in water for about 20 seconds and came out working absolutely fine so Canon must be doig something right with their weather sealing.
 
I've just spent 11 days in a fairly wet (rain and snow) Norway and the camera is still fully functional despite little or no protection.
 
I would always protect my cameras out in the rain, after all they're electronic devices and it'd be stupid not to.

The difference is that I'd worry about a non-weathersealed camera more than a weathersealed one.

Where you're right is that it's lots better than your Iphone, but then I sometimes carry my camera for hours outside hanging round my neck, the Iphone is never out for more than a few minutes.When the camera is out, it's covered in the rain.
 
I never believe too much about the weather sealing these days, seen quite a few shockers (even the 1DX in mild rain)
Just cover it, I bought one of those cheap £15 all weather covers on amazon, it holds enough room for a 70-200 2.8 ii and 1DX + 580 on top, can't complain, it looks ***** but still gives me freedom to go out in the wet with the dog etc :)

Ages ago I had 30D soaked in the bag when I got caught in a rain storm. These had no sealing, but it just carried on as normal. So it depends how it gets wet.

Obviously sealed cameras are a lot more resistant, unless badly assembled, or perished due to old age
