I have been taking pictures with my nikon d3100 for a few months now but still having problems with the focus.

Many of them are out of focus even when it's on auto focus.

Any ideas why?
Cheers Nikki

When you set autofocus are you letting the camera choose what to focus on?

Best practise it so change the settings so you are using just one focus point rather than all of them. Start with the centre point and make sure you can get stuff in the centre of the frame in focus.

Once you have done that you can either recompose or you can start using different focus points.

Examples would help us understand what is going on - but gut feel is the above will fix it.

I have D5000 which is somewhat similar and i always use center point focus and recompose, it gives more control over the image. I also have the AE-F/L lock button on the back set to auto-focus only and the shutter release for exposure lock only (and shutter release obviously). This way i can separate the focus from the exposure, it also makes using center point focus easier (and probably the rest) as you can compose and meter separately .
