Well, seeing as though yesterday was my 23rd, I bought myself a Canon 430EXii and a Nifty Fifty. Really pleased with my purchases, although I have no idea what I am doing with the flash!

Does anybody have any good suggestions, websites, blogs or tutorials on how to learn to use the flash?

Regards.

strobist 101 is a good place to start

for a quick self-taught lesson set your flash and camera to manual, iso 100, 1/125s, f/1.8, half power on the flash. Now point the flash head at the white ceiling (if you've got one) and take a picture. try adjusting the following and note what happens:

aperture
flash power
iso
shutter speed

I'll monitor this thread as I too have recently bought a 430EXii but don't really know how to use it.

@ bomberman - I'll give that a go tomorrow.

If your using it on camera it seems silly not to try Ettl2, I usually start at ISO 100, F2 on the nifty and 1/200th sec in manual mode on the camera, bounced of the ceiling, I then change the shutter speed and the aperture to suit.
I also bracket my shots up to 1 stop either side of the normal exposure.

The real fun starts when you get it off camera, then you can play with softboxes, umbrella's etc.

ETT-L all the way to learn. Camera in Av flash pointing at the ceiling. Adjust ev on camera to alter ambient light and adjust ev on flash up or down to adjust flash power. Stick a business card on the flash for a bounce card. Simples. When you're feeling adventurous start bouncing off walls instead for more shadow definition.
