Hi,

Has anyone gone from a 1D3 to the 5D3?

Something i see myself doing when the prices stop being silly, so just curios for now.

I had a 1D4 and a 1D3.

I sold the 1D3 this week and bought a 5D3.

The 1D3 with good lenses is a great camera. So why did I sell the 1D3 and pay an extra £1600 for the 5D3 as I normally buy second hand.

I want a really top notch lighter 2nd body. i.e. great image quality together with proper tracking & lighter than the 1D4. I have a 50D but it's not there for me.

Yes the 5D3 has only just come out and will only get cheaper. However as I plan to keep the body for many years I figured I'd get it now.

Impressions.

It 'aint' no 1D. That is when you are used to a 1D body, you are used to that heavy solid build. But that's the point this is much lighter but still feels solid.

No it can't focus at 10fps, but if I need 10fps I have the 1D4. 6fps is plenty.

Dual cards. Just like a 1D it has dual cards. I know memory cards don't fail often but I still like having dual cards.

Tracking. Well I haven't had chance to try that yet but if you're registered on POTN then check this out for tracking http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1171929

If you need the weather sealing then stick with the 1D3. However I wouldn't shy away from using the 5D3 for a short time in very light rain.

You didn't say what you shoot though.

Thats a cracking shot and thanks for the feedback.

I've never trusted weather sealing anyway so that is of no worry to me, hows the AF speed compared to the 1D3 - I think that is my main concern as the lack of reach due to dropping the crop is made up for by an increase in resolution and the IQ looks great.

Focussing seems great BUT this is me pointing at things in the garden. I haven't had chance to use it for sports. However I think it will be great. If it's fast enough for the bird photographers then it'll be fast enough for sports people.

If you use your 1D3 at 10fps this wont keep up. Also remember that writing to SD is much slower so get a fast CF card and use that for sports.

If you are shooting field sports like football, rugby, hockey as you mention your lenses will appear shorter.
 
Cheers again Robin, mostly it would be for the kids and birds, that sort of thing - I almost never use it in machine gun mode so I can't see me missing that.

Looks like its on my shopping list when it get s a bit cheaper :)
 
Cheers - much better pricing and I've used Kerso before so know how good he is - just need to wait on a price drop - about a year I would guess.

Cheers - just wondering if there are any more of you out there made the switch - now prices are coming down a bit its looking more possible, just its still alot of money.

That was my point John. i.e. when you consider it good value for the price then it's the right time for you to buy it.

Just having having a morning coffee at my mates in France. Here for a week so hopefully will get time to try the AF.

I'm at the latter stages of waiting I think - I've even put up a price check request on a few bits, if I can get around £2K then I'll make the switch, although I would be loosing a couple of pretty good if underutilised lenses.
