Why it is that some threads show replies oldest to newest and some threads show replies newest to oldest?

I think what you're seeing is the threads you've not visited show the oldest, and threads you've read or interacted with jump to the lastest unread messages.

Also, if you go into a thread via the date/time option that will take you straight to the newest.

When you're on the list page looking at thread titles, bottom line of each title shows the time/date for the last post, if you click that it'll show newest.
