(Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co shares lost more than half their value on Friday as the company hired a law firm well-known for bankruptcy cases, triggering speculation that the photography pioneer could file for bankruptcy.
This would be a shame, but it seems kodak have been badly hit by the digital camera market, lets hope they manage to sort things out.

I think Kodak's problem is they never really ventured into the DSLR market, and simply concentrated on compacts and mid range bridge cameras (although they do supply a lot of electronics to various companies). If you look at their range of cameras now it makes for pitiful reading;

Its a shame, as they are the grand daddy of the photography world.

Yes they did, they left it again pretty sharpish though....

I never realised! I'd be interested to see what they offered up.

Edit - found it, and this is what Wikipedia says;

"Both the SLR/c and the SLR/n were officially discontinued by Kodak on May 31, 2005, although remaining stock would be sold and the cameras would be fully supported through 2008. Kodak cited poor profitability of the sector in its announcement."

That was their mistake. How can the DSLR market not be potentially profitable?? It had full frame Nikon internals, made by Sigma and took Canon lenses as well! It was the perfect camera AND THEY KILLED IT! Lol!

And they also made one that took Nikon lenses (the SLR/n), and one which was purely monochrome (which to me seems stupid?!). I'd love to know if anyone on here has one, or has used one.

The second (after the Contax N Digital, which I'd never heard of) full-frame DSLR on the market, the Nikon F80-based DCS-14 was available in both Nikon and Canon mounts and prior to that they had the DCS 400, based on the Nikon N90 film camera.

We have one of those Kodaks here, in good light the quality is stunning, sadly in poor light it's grim.

It's a classic case. Real shame, one of the world's greatest brands ever.

I think they started to lose their way decades ago, when it became clear they had no idea how to handle competition, or to innovate, or evolve their massive and inflexible structure. They just stuck their heads in the sand, and it has to be said, made a flippin fortune for an amazingly long time.

They completely messed up over Polaroid, dismissed Fuji, Disc was a farce, and APS was too little too late with digital just around the corner :(

Goes to show no matter how big they become, if you don't keep up with the rest anyone can fail. Would be a shame to see such an Iconic brand disappear.

Canon's Canon EOS D2000 and Canon EOS D6000 were both re-branded Kodak dSLR.

The EOS 1n does not look that different from today's 1 series

I think it is pretty likely that in a firesale of assets if they do go down, there are companies who will jump at the chance of picking up the rights to Portra film which are just excellent.
