Katzeye vs. the green dot

I've just discovered the Katzeye split prism focusing screen and I'm thinking about modifying both of my D300 bodies as I like to use an old series E 28mm for landscape work. So ... before spending the money, a question to those Nikon users that have this fitted.

Does it really offer any real advantage over the green dot when manual focusing or is it just a largely cosmetic retro thing?
 
I've used them on pentax bodies and like them, but it's a little bit 50:50 whether they improve the focus or whether it's the fact that you end up paying attention to the focus calibration on your camera and fine tuning it when you install the screen. I don't know about Nikon, but they do slightly affect the metering on Pentax. It's consistent though, so easy to dial in compensation for.
 
In the absence of Nikonites, I can give you a Canonite's opinion.

I've used Katz screens on several bodies and find them to be excellent quality but I now use Canon's own split prism screens as they've available for the body I use them in.
Landscape?....I can't really see the point for general stuff as I believe that the stock/matte focus screens are going to get you close enough.....I use mine for macro where things are generally more critical.

Split prisms have their place but I'm not sure that they're going to benefit you greatly.

Thanks Bob ... that sort of confirms what I was thinking. I don't doubt that it could be a useful modification in certain circumstances but not absolutely neccassary for general work. I think I'll abandon that idea for the moment. I've got other items on my shopping list that are competing for the cash.
