Keeping bags smelling fresh?

So how do you keep your bags smelling fresh?

Camera bags get a lot of abuse, including getting sweaty hand in its cavities and having wet DSLR shoved into it. All those random outside liquids will make inside of the bag dirty and smelly.

Is there anyway to freshen up and keep it smelling fresh? I don't really want to take out my camera and have to hold my breath every time I put to against my nose.

(probably a very strange question..... )

Silica Gel packets and Febreeze. Although if the bag smells that bad it might be worth sticking it in the washer (check manufacturers info first)

My Lowepro Nova 160 started to smell bad when I stopped using it. I want to stop it happening to my Billingham Hadley Pro.

Both the 5D2 I bought second hand and the Billingham 335 had a good scent when I bought it, was just wondering if there had been any tricks?

I've always kept a load of silica gel in the bottom of my bag but I can't think I've ever noticed a smell coming from it. If I ever did notice it I'd give it a spray over with Febreeze or some deodourant etc. My inserts are pretty much water resistant material, it's only the velcro that connects iy that's likely to get smelly.

Having said that I don't often shoot in poor weather so I don't get wet cameras to go away.
