Been a bit windy lately and my small travel tripod can get a bit unsteady on its feet so came up with this idea.
Not exactly revolutionary, but for a little extra weight and small amount of cash (under two quid) it works very nicely on any surface apart from the obvious concrete, tarmac etc.

Don't always have a heavy bag to hang on the hook and will be using this method even when I do, definitely adds a bit of security and peace of mind.

Now to work out how to fix it on my larger tripod that doesn't have a hook, not really needed most of the time, but could be handy if it got very gusty

Firstly take (not forgetting something to cover the point when in your bag, bit of rubber propane gas hose works for me, a cork would also do or anything else you can think of)

Secondly twist or push the peg in and fix/tighten guy rope

I suggested that same solution on an astronomy forum years ago, much better idea than hanging a pendulum off the hook.

Never expected to be the originator although I haven't seen it suggested before (great minds etc, Martyn). Sometimes simple ideas get overlooked or not seen by those it might benefit and if it works for anyone else worth posting here I reckon
 
I do similar, especially if I am doing time-lapse.

I use these with the guy-ropes attached.

Another option would be elasticated cord connected to a caribena clip.

Tie the cord into a big loop and then make small knots every 6" - 8" so you have what looks like a collection of loops joined together.

Put your camera bag, regardless of it's size on the ground between the legs, clip the caribena to a loop on the bag and then stretch the cord to a suitable length and hook one of the loops to a convenient point on the tripod.

If the ground is really wet or dirty and you don't want to get your bag dirty, use the bottom loop of the cord as a stirrup and put your foot in it to provide the downward pressure.

Agree...a pendulum can catch a light breeze and sway causing more problems than it solves.
