Keeping your (compact) camera safe?

Hi,

I just got a sony rx100 to replace my fuji X10 and I'm heading to a few tourist hotspots while on holday next week and am looking to keep it safe, but close at hand while not using it. I'll be having it on a secure wrist strap when using it so it won't be possible to simply snatch it out of my hands.

I wanted to get your opinion on getting a case like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal..._Camera_Cases_Bags_Covers&hash=item2c67497b31 and wearing it on my belt just above my front trouser pocket. That way it won't be easy to cut off (Like wearing the camera round my neck would be), and because its on my front it will be easier for me to see/tell if anyone has their hands on it.

How does that sound? Any other options I should be looking at or general safety tips?

Belt cases like that seem a bit fiddly as you can't easily see what you're doing, I always feel only a matter of time before the camera gets dropped.
Also it can be all too easy to catch the case rather badly in a tight squeeze location such as getting in and out of vehicles, or turnstyles.
In these 'risky' locations it might be safer literally in your pocket without the case if need be.
 
I tend to put my GRD IV in my pocket when not using it - it's a fairly similar size to the RX100 and I find this easier than putting it in a case. If I was anywhere crowded I'd probably keep it in my hand as it's so small my hand will pretty much wrap around it so a thief would need to prise it out of my fingers, and I'd generally hold it in front of me so less easy to snatch from behind.
 
It's sensible to minimise the risk though.
It might not just be the modest value camera but 20GB of pictures in the card.

Me too! I've always been happy wandering round with a couple of thousand pounds worth of equipment round my neck/in the bag - if someone were to try to mug me they would either get a nasty surprise or a load of kit, depending on what they were carrying.

Possibly another reason to use smaller cards and swap them more frequently.
