Kenko Teleconverters for canon

i know there are several posts about teleconverters and across most 3rd party brands there seems to be a whole variety of models
( compatibility list here )

however what seems to be missing from that list and one i can find very little info on is one im currently considering.
its a Kenko 1.7x C-AF1.
ive got all EF lenses so compatibility shouldnt be to much of an issue though primarly its for my 100-300 canon lens.
was looking for a 1.4x ( only 1 stop of light loss ) but then came across this 1.7x one which looks rather promising.. but just cant find out much about it and how many stops it loses and compatible lens list.
being on a budget to get the longer focal length a TC seems to be my only option at moment ( about £60-70 to spend ).
 
there latest gen 1.4 is very good, the problem is that 100-300 is 5.6? so if the tc is chipped you will loose AF, if its not itll hunt alot

if the front element doesnt rotate then a screw in 1.7 teleconverter might be the way to go, the panasonic lt55 is really good, and heard the olympus 1.7 is as well. the screw on ones lose less light when i tested mine :o
I use the lt55 with my sigma dp3 and tamron 70-300 and you really cant tell :O. they do effect close focusing, so you cant close focus anymore really
 
odd thing is as much as ive googled i cant find the 1.7x kenko anywhere other than this one seller. can clearly see it state model and multiplier on the converter but cant see Kenko name anyway and nothing on kenko site so wondering if its another brand. i know a 2x would be just to dark to work sensibly with so a 1.7 would be ideal. not worried about it hunting it would be primarlily for use shooting wildlife from a hide ( or other static location so i would preset focal point and then make minor manual adjustment as needed.
just wish i could find out more info.
ive also found another one which is labeled as TELEPLUS SHQ C AF 1.7X .. not sure what the SHQ designates in terms f quality as there are so many variants ( DG, DGX, MC etc )
 
yeah thats just about managable.. trying to find out if its 4 elements or the better quality 7 elements though is proving to be a headache!
 
I think the 1.7x is one Kenko did a while ago and not availkable now, proably not the best optically, I have an old Tamron 1.4 that were made by Kenko and it's not too good, on the other hand a more recent Kenko 1.4 pro 300 DGX that I use is pretty good, I got for £100 S/H.

I believe Teleplus are made by Kenko, along with DOI HQ. I have read that the seven element are the ones to go for. I have recently purchased a Tamron SP teleconverter with 7 elements and I must say that the image quality hasn't dropped that much if any. I have been using it with a Tokina 100-300mm f4 and a Tamron 80-210mm f3.8 lens which I purchased last week. I tried the Tamron out yesterday and I am pleased with the initial tests.

I have tried the 4 elements Teleconverters in M42 mount and I have found them poor compared to the seven I have now got. I have been using them with a Fuji Xpro-1 and XT1.

I got mine from Ffordes for £15.00 and the teleconverter is close to mint. Link below if any use, although looking at the Canon EF ones they are above your budget and no x1.7 in stock. I have my above mentioned lenses in FD mount then used with an adapter.

Also when you see a older TC with the letters MC4, MC7 etc, it means it's multi coated and 4 or 7 elements. eg MC7 = Multi Coated 7 elements. SHQ may mean something like Super High Quality for that particilar brand.

To add to the above: When you look at the TC you will usually be able to tell if it's 4 or 7 elements by the height of the TC. 7 element are a bit bigger / higher than the 4's.

Edit: It's worth keeping a look out at Ffordes as they often have new old stock. They have Canon 70-210mm FD fitting lenses now which are new old stock along with FD teleconverters.

Double edit: PM manualfocus-g, he's pretty clued up on these older lenses and TC.

think on dyxum they recommend the latest kenko tc
m42 the 2x komroa ? Is decent, I got one cheap :-). Never seen 1.4 or 1.7 m42 ones
 
looks like all the 1.4x and 1.7x are 4 ( and occasiionally the uber expensive high end ones ) 5 elements anyway.
will have to do some hunting around as dont want a 2x tele so need to find a 1.4 or 1.7x in budget
