Kenko Teleplus DGX Converter 1.4x for EF 70-300L IS USM

Yes, I have that combination, assuming it's the same DGX 300 Pro (red dot) that I have?
Also I assume by "works" you mean AF?

At 300mm it AF's ok but I would not stake my life on a shot with it. If you have really good light and a subject with good contrast then it AF's fine but I'd never trust it without both conditions satisfied. Below 300mm there's no problem because the len's max aperture falls within AF spec.

It has virtually zero effect on IQ (to my poor eyes anyway) if that's what you meant by 'working'.

Yes I do mean the 300 Pro
 
Same piece of kit then. Basically I'll use it on the 70-300L at 300mm for static subjects with good contrast but anything moving requiring the use of Servo AF and I won't trust it, sometimes it's fine and sometimes it's not.

I did think that moving subjects may be an issue for the AF.

One use was for a potential safari holiday in the near future :cool:
 
For a safari with the 70-300L I would be reluctant to use the TC. I've been on a safari and much of the action takes place towards & during dusk; you won't want to lose a stop of light and it will struggle to AF reliably in poor light.

I know its not the same lens but i used the 300 Pro on my 70-200mm f4L at waddington and I was surprised at the speed this combination focused at tracking warplanes at many hundreds of miles per hour.

Would using it on the 70-300mm be realy that much slower ? I dont think so.
 
I've got the Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x converter, and while I've not tried it with a 70-300L I have used it on a 70-200 with great effect. I've used it on most of the lenses in my sig including the Sigma 150-500 OS and that even retained AF, albeit very slow, on my 5D3 before it had the firmware update. I also tried it on a 100-400L and it retained AF on a 550D, 7D and a 5D2 but again it was slower.
 
I have the 1.4x pro and 70-300mmL ... personally I am with WilliamC, it's fine for static subjects but I certainly wouldn't use it for anything moving rapidly (or for that matter, anything important) as it's not consistent enough.

Absolutely. It comes down to maximum aperture, and anything with a native max aperture of f/5.6 will struggle. I tried the same teleconverter on the non-L version of the 70-300mm IS and that was woeful.

Very much so, On my 70-200mm f4L USM the focusing is rapid fast and when I put the 1.4 x PRO 300 on its only a fraction slower and focuses very fast to f11 Ive not tried any smaller than that yet.

A combination that works very well together Loss of IQ is very marginal as well.
