I can see why you have gone for a long pano to give that long perspective

but I would also just try a different crop, say 8 x 10 and reduce the OOF areas on the right mainly, but also on the left to see what it looks like

I thing keep both shots would look attractive

I have done Your suggested crop Bill, in fact two version and They both look better for it. Thanks for the advice.
 
I like that with the darkened background in the upper third and then the transition through the bird to the lighter bg. in the lower third.
