Killed my D50?

I've dropped my Nissin Di622 flashgun onto a hard surface while fitting batteries. It appeared to still work ok so I stuck it on my D50 and took a few test shots.

1st couple were ok but then they started coming out like this......

Now whatever settings I use on the D50 I get the same (with and without flash). A hard reset (reset button on the bottom) made no difference.

Not suprisingly I don't want to test the flashgun on either my D80 or D300 as it if kills those I will be very unhappy......

Anyone got any ideas before I throw both the D50 and flashgun in the bin?

Does it look that bad on the LCD?

Yes, same on the lcd and I have tried two memory cards just in case one was corrupted.

Have you tried a different lens in case its the electronics in the lens that are fried?

Also - do you get the exact same 'bleeding' effect every time - i.e. the bleed pattern is identical or does it vary?

Thanks for the suggestions because you just helped me fix it!

Not sure how though.....

The explain - I took a couple of shots with the camera on my desk. Pattern was pretty similar between them but not 100% identical.
I then put it on manual exposure - same results.
I then put the lens on manual (lens switch on the kit 18-55) and took a shot....... image was ok!

Now whatever I do (auto or manual af, auto exposure etc) the image is ok again. So it would appear that putting the lens on manual fixed it but how the lens was affecting the image like that I really don't understand!

Question is, was dropping the flash a red herring?

I'm not sure how that has fixed things either! It might be worth testing the trigger voltage of the flash before using it on the camera again?

Just had another try and the fault is back :-(

Putting the lens on manual etc hasn't fixed it this time, neither has using another (old, screw focus, lens)

now I am really puzzled. Given I don't appear to have anything to lose I put the flash back on the camera and it all appears to function correctly, apart from the dodgy images that is. Not sure that tells me anything.

I could get my scope out and attempt to measure the trigger voltage but I tempted to just stop using the flash on camera (it is still useful as a manual off camera flash) and take this as an opportunity to get a better on-camera flash.

Shame about the D50 but I still have a D80 and a D300 so it is not a disaster if I have to retire it.
