Kindles for a hospital - help please

From the Christian Blandford Fund I am looking to buy some Kindles for a children's ward.

I haven't got one so not sure how best to supply them so I have a couple of questions that I'm sure will be obvious to an owner.

Will a Kindle be able to be used by many patients with any of them able to add to the contents or read the books that have been downloaded by people before?

Or is it linked to one Amazon account and the user needs to enter their email and password to read the books bought using that account?

You can password a Kindle or not. No other security. Password is worthwhile as you can download books and they will be charged to your account. Otherwise no restrictions.
 
yes - but when you download a new book it is charged to the credit card registered to your account. That is the only thing to be careful of!
 
There are a huge number of free books available on the web. Books where the copyright has expired. There are no restrictions on loading those on to a Kindle.

It doesn't matter if they are not in MOBI format. There is a great donationware program called Calibre that organises and converts many different formats. It has helped me a lot with my collection of around 500 books. http://calibre-ebook.com/about
