Kingfishers seem to have become very popular lately ;)

I thought a different view might be of interest :) - this one shows the bird entering its nesthole

Lovely work! :)

Cheers purpleclouds :)

Dare I ask...was it flash? Or a conveniently placed sun? :)

Both actually! This particular nest hole is in an area that is deeply shaded in the early morning and so I've been using twin wireless flash units for the first few hours after dawn.

However, at about 9'ish the sun shines through a gap in the tree canopy and for the next half hour or so slowly works its way across the nesthole bank. This particular shot was taken with flash but during that sunny period :)

I should perhaps add that I've used flash extensively with Kingfishers and that the birds show absolutely no reaction to or ill effects from it (unlike nocturnal birds such as Owls & Nightjars). Prior to doing so I researched the point extensively and found that the authors of all 5 books on Kingfishers published in the UK in the last 50 years had successfully used flash without causing the birds any disturbance what so ever.
