Kit change. Will I miss VR?

Hi,

So I'm thinking of selling up and leaving Pentax as they just don't off a tele zoom at a reasonable price, and they never come up secondhand, when they do they're in such high demand the price is nearly the same as new!

I'm thinking of moving from my k-5ii to a D7000, I was wondering what difference having no VR will be as the K-5 has it in body.

After selling all my lenses I would be looking at buying a sigma 100-300 f4 and a nikon 50 1.8d. I'd probably get the sigma teleconverter to go with the sigma to make it 420mm. I'm really just looking for a better 100-300 range then hat offered by Pentax (55-300 f4.5-4.6) as i shot a lot of zoos, this lens is super rare in Pentax mount.

Would i miss VR with these lenses and do you think they are a good choice for my first 2 with Nikon? I have no idea for a reasonable kit, 16-85?

What you think?

Regards

Paul

I think you will miss the SR that Pentax gives with it's body unless you buy a tele zoom with VR. I have the 100-300mm f4 Sigma for my 7D as well as the K-5II and there is no way I can get the same sort of sharpness with a slow shutter speed on the Canon when using it handheld, obviously on a tripod or monopod it's not such a problem.

Nikon do a decent 70-300mm VR at a reasonable price don't they?

They do have a decent 70-300 VR but i'm after 400-500 hence the teleconverter which I read works very well on the sigma 100-300, then I can take it off and still have a constant f4 100-300 which is nice to have rather than 300 @ f5.6. It just really annoys me that I cant get hold of good tele quick telezooms at a reasonable price for Pentax. I have had the sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 which has just broke so I don't want to replace it with a Pentax 55-300 F4.5-5.8 as I always fell like i need a little more reach. Pentax don't venture into 400mm and I dont want a prime as I like the versatile nature of the telezoom. I feel really stuck whether to stay with Pentax and put up with a 55-300 or leave and get a 100-300 with a teleconverter but have no VR on any of my lenses unless I shell out more for it... Argh!!

I think he wants the constant f4 in the 100-300mm range as well as the reach using the teleconverter (which is why I didn't suggest the big Sigmas).

Trouble is there really is nothing like the Sigma 100-300mm f4, still don't know why they discontinued it ... would be a killer lens if they updated it with OS and gave it the new body trim.

Simples - SRS were doing a deal on the Sigma 150-500 in PKAF mount recently and I paid £550 for the most recent iteration - other fits - £800.

Buying a used 100-300 is not without risk - I sold mine a few years ago to get my DA*60-250 - and it then suffered a catastrophic focussing failure - but the DA 55-300 is not a bad lens - even the DA-L that is cheaper is optically idential to the DA.

I have another option for you - the FA 80-320....
