Kit dilemma - wedding togs please advise

I shoot with a 5D MKIII and 35mm f/1.4L as my main body but have a 6D with the 85mm f/1.8 for longer range candids… its a good setup but the 6D is driving me mad at the moment, especially at one or two of the venues I shoot at a lot where it's pretty dark inside… the focussing system is quite frankly terrible.

I want to sell the 6D and buy another 5D MKIII, but with a baby on the way in a few weeks I have other priorities when it comes to cash, so one thought I had was to sell the 6D + my 70-200mm f/2.8 (non IS) to fund the 5D MKIII. That would be fine but I'm just wondering if I'll ever be short of a long range lens? I tbh never use it but I guess there's always a wedding where I might be at the back of a very big church and need that extra reach. If I sold it I would be left with 35mm, 85mm, 24-70mm as my only focal ranges.

The other option would be to sell the 6D and my old 7D which is currently my 3rd and 'final straw' backup… that would leave me with two 5D MKIII's but nothing else. Chances of both going down at a wedding are very remote but not something I would really want to risk.

Would be good to get other wedding togs thoughts on this… I think sadly I might just need to stick with what I have but it's starting to annoy me, plus the worry is if the 5D MKIII died part way through a wedding I'd be left with the 6D as my main body which doesn't fill me with much joy!
 
Andy, are you sure the 6d hasn't developed a fault? I thought the 6d was meant to have a very good focusing system in low light. It's not as good as the 5diii though so know how frustrating it can be. That's why it's always better to have two of the same bodies.

If I was you I'd sell the 6d, the 70-200 and the 24-70. With the cash I'd buy a 5diii and a 135L.

You probably won't miss the 36mm to 84mm focal range and if you do, you can pick up a 50mm 1.4 on the cheap.

Cheers for the reply Ben, I hadn't considered that option so will look in to it :)

Centre point on the 6D is fine but the rest are awful, can't really centre and recompose at f/2 either. I find even the centre spot misses more than any of the cross reference points on the MKIII
 
You could just sell up and buy a couple Nikon D750s.... Talk about low light capability!

No problem.

That's my exact setup. 2 x 5diii, 35mm, 85mm and 135 mm. I have a 50mm but never use it and never really care for anything wider than 35mm - I feel I'm covered with those 3 lenses.

It depends on how you shoot though.

The 135 is something else mind.

I never found it a very useful focal length, but the quality...

Never use the 24-70mm tbh, just for the odd commercial job but reckon I could get away with 35mm & 85mm on 2x 5D MKIII's instead.

That's the route I would go (and have gone) Andy. I haven't shot as many weddings as you (and others) of course, but I find that combo superb. Although I have now gone to Nikon, I have a pair of Df's with 35 & 85. I do plan to add something wider (probably 24 F1.4) at some point but that's it really.

Just looked in to this a bit more... if I sell the 3 items for what I reckon I could get, the 'swap' would probably only cost me £100 to make! Ben if you were here (and it's probably a good job you aren't) I would probably kiss you, not even just a little peck but tongues and everything :D
 
well for a7s you would need a adapter, new batteries and a couple of sd cards, not the end of the world

That sounds romantic! Although I can't believe you'd do that whilst your partner is carrying your child :)

If you buy second hand or from HDEW you may even come out of it with some cash. Then you can use the spare money to fly down to see me and love can blossom.

Or you could just put it towards baby clothes.

that is odd though, although the outer points are not the best i personally find the centre point utterly superb :S
 
I have the 5Dii and a 7D, I find the focusing system on the 5Dii infuriating and can't wait to get the 5Diii later in the year.
Also I would prefer in your shoes to have 2x5Diii or a 7D so that you can swap cards easily. Doesn't the 6D take SD?
 
what about a 5D2 ?

fair play (that wasnt there when i posted) so i guess you best bet is sell the 6 and the 7 get another 5/3 and then wait for the 5/4 launch to knab a third 5/3 second hand (although it might also be worth seeing what the 7/2 is like )
 
odd indeed, mine is 99% accurate with ease, have you had to adjust lenses or anything?

Must be the only person ive seen to of had many miss shot images, most of the people i know and the reviews also say how solid the centre point locks on and is in focus.

Could be a problem maybe as above?

No I've checked the focus with focus charts etc and it is spot on in almost every place I use it... however one venue in particular is very dark and it misses more than the 5D MK III by some distance. Any other place and it's fine... just seems to struggle in the darker venues, no idea why

No I'll do what Ben suggested, that way I keep 3 bodies in my bag... best to have that backup even if I'd hate to have to use the 7D, it is better than nothing :)
