Kit Disaster

I was down at Mupe (near Lulworth Cove) shooting last Sunday afternoon. I was there with a mate and there were at least two other toggers I didn’t know.

I was down on the beach / rocks trying to capture some images. I also had another idea for a shot down on to Mupe rocks from the coast path above on the cliffs. Unfortunately I could see one of the other toggers up on the cliff already. I decided not to go for my other idea as I suspected my shooting spot would be in his view, and most likely he would have ended up in my shot.

So I took a few shots on the beach, and feeling a bit underwhelmed with my results glanced back up the cliff to see if the togger was still there. He was - but looked like he had started putting kit away to move or go home.

The next bit happened in slow motion…

He bent over and picked up his backpack camera bag, and put it on his shoulders. I noticed the flap that holds the gear in the pack fall wide open. I went to shout at him but before I could he turned round, open backpack facing towards the cliff and 3 items fall out of the back and start down the cliff  (I remember at this point thinking oh it’ll be just filters or something not too expensive).

As the gear hit the rocks below 2 of the bits of kit didn’t do much but one piece made a LOUD bang. Although I suspected at this point I didn’t want to believe any of the kit was lenses or cameras.

The guy held his head in his hands I must say I felt extremely gutted for him. He packed up the rest of his gear and took the path down to the beach and rocks below. He wandered around for a bit looking for his gear and I made my way over to see if I could help. By then he had found 2 lens hoods, and the front element of his Canon 24-105 (enough to know the lens hadn’t survived).

Having witnessed this I felt truly gutted for the guy. He did say he was lucky that his 100-400 didn’t fall out (the lens hood did) and that he wasn’t carrying his second body!

If you’re the said togger on here I hope I haven’t embarrassed you. Not my point. Really I just want to say be careful out there.

Sometimes when the light is just right and the creativity is flowing you take shortcuts or rush a bit and kit gets damaged (I managed to drop my Big Stopper on the rocks the other day but it survived for the same reason).

It's called learning the hard way.

I feel for the guy, hope he was insured, lesson for us all to learn. It could have been worse, it could have been more kit, or even him that took the tumble...

Very true.

It's happened to me - my 5d2/24-105 combo hit the tarmac a few yards away...I was just glad that no-one was watching! There were a few dints and scrapes but otherwise all still works.

In a way total loss is better than minor damage - as long as you are insured!

Poor guy, hope he had them insured,

its not happened to me one day out with Mark (Whiteflier) he left his bag unzipped, as he threw it over his shoulder, out flew his canon 30D camera , luckily it landed in soft mud PHEW

It can happen to anyone. Has happened to me. dropped my Canon70-200 F2.8 but not so dramatically, and it survived. Always been ever so careful since

Ask Minimeeze about cliffs and cameras...and waterfalls...ouchy...

A pro I used to assist for took a lens off a Hasselblad body, placed it down on the soft grass he was laying on and watched in slow motion as it rolled right off Malham Cove (80 metres high). He had change to shout to the climbers on the face below who luckily it missed before it hit the ground below. Amazingly whilst internally it was destroyed it remained in one piece and made a cool, if expensive, paperweight.

seem to recall a similar thread to this a while ago , the solution was to make sure the zips were closed at the bottom of the bag and not at the top .........
