Kit fever or worthwhile?

I have recently purchased the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR1 from classifieds forum.

I'm pondering if it is worth getting the 85mm f1.8G or even the f1.8D for portraits.

I mainly use my camera for weddings but I am aiming to build up the studio side of things this year.

My question is if this lens is a lot sharper than the 70-200? Certainly being able to go to f1.8 will be good for outdoor portraits but for the studio it's not going to make much of a difference is it?

I don't think I could justify the cost of the f1.4 for that one stop extra.

I'd be interested if anyone's got both and their experiences. I'm wondering if I have just got kit fever. My kit bag is bursting at the seams! lol
 
I have my 70-200 VRII up for sale, it's just a weight thing in my case. I have ordered the 85 1.8G, it's one of the sharpest lenses Nikon manufacture. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a 70-200, so you save money if you sold that. It'll make that bag a lot lighter too.
 
I have the 85 f1.8d and its crackingly sharp - but I am lusting after the 70-200...... Different strokes for different folks
 
If you want/need the shallower DoF that the f/1.8 will give then the answer's clear. Personally, I'm not a fan of a single eye in focus.

Yup.

Unless you're shooting at f1.4 - 2.8 or whatever the prime is sharper than the zoom at I don't think it'll matter. I assume that the zoom will be into its stride by 3.5-4? so I wonder what advantage the prime will offer?
 
It's a tonne cheaper, and lighter. Those are the reasons for me changing at least. The 1.8G is as good as the 1.4 outside of that wee bit of extra light btw.
