Kit for very cold conditions

Booked a trip to Tromso about 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle in Feb to shoot the Northern Lights.

The operating temperature on my 500D is 0 - 40 degrees C but night temperatures look like -15 to -5 degrees C.

Any recommendations for kit both for the camera and for me?

I already have a hip flask.

Wow that will be a fantastic trip, I hope you see the lights.
I went to alaska and finland last year, temperatures were down to -20/30.I found that batteries drained quickly because of the cold, even when not in the camera but keep them in a warm inner pocket they last a lot longer & take spares of course.
I had a 400d & 50d, both worked fine in the cold, it was very dry atmosphere.I've heard of people having problems with condensation going from cold to warm but I didn't have any trouble but I did let cameras "warm up" slowly by leaving them in their padded bags for a while.You'll need a tripod as well.and decent thermal undies/layers for yourself.You can get pocket handwarmers now in outdoor shops, they work well.Look forward to seeing your photo's.
 
It'll be fine - just keep the batteries warm and don't bring the camera indoors to a warm, moist area until it's warmed to ambient temperature inside a closed camera-bag.
If you can find a secure area exposed to outside air temps, keep your camera bag (but not the batteries) out there.
 
Tape a small handwarmer to the outside of the battery compartment.

If you batteries get cold they will be flat in minutes.

Take plenty of spare batteries (next to your body to keep warm) spare handwarmers and more tape with you :thumbs:
