Kit Inventory Applications

Having a little time on my hands, and having recently purchased some new kit, I thought I'd come up with a proper kit-inventory, and just wondered if anyone knew of a decent application to track the kit - not just purchase prices and dates, but serial numbers, and so forth - the kind of information that would be helpful, not only to insurance co's but to the polis should anything untoward happen.

I know I can cruft something together in excel or whatever, but just wanted to avoid re-inventing the wheel if possible.
