Kit lens progression

Had my 450D for a couple of month, never really been out and used it in anger yet, but holiday up the lakes coming soon.

For the untrained eye (and novice photographer) what are the limitations of the 18-55 IS lens? Is there any point me looking for the next progression when I haven't even used it properly yet. I find myself attracted to the trade pages for some reason.

Looking at all round lens really, but is the kit lens the job for that? Family fotos, portraits and landscapes. But these will be for family viewing not for critical eye.

Does that make sense:D
 
the kit lens is decent especially the canon 18-55mm IS, i would try it out first and see if you need anything wider than 18mm or anything longer than 55mm that way you know what lens you'll need before purchasing a need kit lens replacement.

oh and two great lenses to be purchased after the kit lens are normally the 55-250mm and the 50mm f1.8.

At this point in your "career" I would suggest that you forget the technology and equipment for a while and just use what you have; be creative with it, find ways to make it work for you, use it to figure out what kind of photography you like to do. When you know what you like and what's stopping you from getting it, only then it's time to figure out what lenses etc you might need.

I suspect that the 18-55 would be more than adequate for your needs at this point, it works very well for what you listed above. But play around with it and see if you find any limitations with it.

I spent many years with a 17-85 lens before truly understanding what it could do, and more importantly, what it couldn't do. Only then did I start looking for something that would allow me to capture my imagination more precisely. YMMV.
