Hi All,

I am due my annual bonus at the end of this month and I have been umming and ahhing about what (if any) lens to buy.

At the moment all I have with my D60 is:
Kit lens - Nikon AF-s 18-55mm f3.5 - f5.6 (VR)
Zoom - Nikon AF-s 55-200 f4.5 - f5.6 (VR)
Raynox 150 & 250

I am torn between getting a macro (Tamron 90mm / Sigma 105mm), replacement zoom for my kit lens, or a 35mm prime.

My question really is - what would you recommend as options for a replacement for my kit lens? I've seen a S/H Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM for £150. Would this be a good buy or am I going to have to spend a bit more?

i am liable to suggest the prime

but i can't tell you what you need, really.

The Nikon 18-70mm is a cracking little lens for the price and definitely a couple of steps above the kit for a reasonable price (about £120 s/h). I have heard good reports about the Sigma and I have an old (ish) 24-60mm f2.8 which is so sharp you need to wear gloves when handling it.

I'm actually veering towards the prime... I've been getting on ok with my two lenses as it is, might be a good kick up the bum to do something a bit different.

If you have a bit more to spend my choice would be a 16-85mm, but the 18-70mm is a great lens and not to expensive.

Thanks Andy - I'm conscious of the AF-S issue with my D60 which tends to bump to price up but I will have a look at the lenses you've suggested.

As a replacement for the kit lens I would want either more range or a constant f2.8 or some sort of OS.

Fact is, the 18-55 VR is a great lens and you'll need to spend a fair bit to get a better all-round package.

Also, you need to consider the balance of the camera - I put a 18-105 on my D60 and it was pretty front heavy (but great on my D90) - I loved the range though, 105mm is easily long enough for everyday use.

Depends on your budget

17-50 2.8 tamron with the build in motor
17-55 nikon 2.8, more expensive but brilliant
24/28-70 2.8 sigma, You will need the HSM version but if you hunt around you can pick them up for less than 300
