Kit lens replacement

I'm looking to replace my 18-55 IS kit lens that I got with my 450d with something a bit better, within a similar focal range.

Looking to spend around about £350.

The one lens I keep coming back to, and has been suggested to me, is the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC...

What's other peoples opinions on this lens, and also any other alternatives within my budget worth considering?
 
the tamron 17-50mm non VC is generally considered sharper.

It's on par with the excellent canon/nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 lenses for sharpness.

That's the one I'd have.
 
I have the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non-VC as using Sony with built in stabilisation), and it is an absolutely brilliant lens, I love it. Very sharp wide open, even sharper at f/4.0. It's not very sharp when taking pictures of things close up though.
 
Thanks guys, it seems the Tamron is the one to go for then...the non VC version, which I don't mind as it'll mostly be on tripod anyhow.

Joe, i'm not fussed about taking things close up, so that's fine for me.

Another vote for the Tamron, my main lens atm and performs very well! As said, the non-VC one is the one to go for!
