Kit trouble

Hi,

I am looking to get a replacement for the kit lens. My main use for this lens will be indoors portraits. Secondary use will be landscape and street photography. I generally don't bother with a flash if I can help it. So what I am looking for is something with a shallow DOF and decent bokeh, it should ideally be portable as well as sharp. The lenses I have been considering are the following:

Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS (nice, but too big and bulky as well as expensive)
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.0

Have anyone used these lenses for the given main scenario?

Have you considered the Tamron 17-50 2.8? I just got one about a month ago and I'm loving it so far. Picked it up for aout £250 online.

Here's my vote for the Sigma 17-70... it replaced my Canon kit lens and I was very happy with the results. It's sharp and portable - wide enough to use for landscapes, makes decent portraits (f/4), and is good value for money.

Tamron is well worth concidering

Thanks for the thoughts. I have read a bit about the Tamron, and it seems to me that there are quite a lot of difference between the user experience.

I'm heavily depending AF so I'm especially concerned about what I have read about its focusing problems when used with Canon bodies.

Does anyone have any experience with the 550D + Tamron?
