Yes
ATM, it's work in progress, but I'd like people's thoughts on it so far, and CC. As much CC as possible, even if it's not something good, so it can help me make the site better.

At the moment, I need to work on a "home" page, and on the about page, there's a lump of text which needs to be re-wrote, and we're going to put a picture of us on there too.

The main portfolio page also need re-doing, as I done them as a temp.

Not sure if I need/want packages, and for contact, needs doing.

But what I've done so far would be good for it to be talked about. Good, and bad. :)

I don't like the fact that the width is fixed.. i.e. if i resize my window, the webpage should resize too.

I'm guessing the width is equal to a number, rather than a percentage?

Like the drop down menu's :)

it take a while to load the photos, that being my main grumble

My gripe too, but I'm stuck on how to reduce the file size, without reducing the quality!

Yeah, it's fixed to 790 pixels wide, as most people these days have 1024x768 resolution settings.

Thanks. :)

Home:

Nice clean, modern design here that instantly looks professional. I like the font used for your logo, I like the colours used in the design and I like the way it all sits in the middle of my browser window. Looks good so far.

Perhaps the main area you'll be working in is a little too tall for a 'standard' browser window as it would require a little scroll down, but without knowing what's going to be on the homepage it's difficult to know if that would be a problem.

I'm not sure about the menu bar, although I do like it. I'm just not keen on the way the buttons seem to change from a slight gradient to a solid white and 'grow' a little in the process. I think having a mouseover change is very good, but I'm not totally taken by the way it has been implemented. I do like the fly-out menu under 'Portfolio' but I'd like to see the individual lines being highlighted as I move my mouse down.

About Us:

What's here is fine for now but I'm sure you realise it needs more content and more detail. No complaints about the potential but hard to judge without seeing the finished article, as it were.

Portfolio:

I'm not keen on the main page. I like the idea of the little Polaroid-esque thumbnails but I don't like the spacing and I don't like the ones that have been rotated slightly. I'd prefer a neater, straighter line-up with the thumbnails more evenly-spaced.

Automotive:

There's a very slight delay on entering the gallery but after a second everything seems to load nice and quickly, although I am on a relatively fast connection. Though I wouldn't say I was overly taken with the implementation of the gallery. it's a nice idea but I'm finding the images are changing too quickly and on my 'standard' sized browser I've got to scroll down the page to see the thumbnails. I'd quite like to see them on the right where the text currently sits, but then I'm not sure where you'd put that.

The images themselves are very nice, albeit a little dark in places, but they move so fast it's quite tough to get a good look. And while I appreciate being given the option to pause and adjust the transition speed, I'd probably set the default to somewhere in the region of 7 or 8 seconds.

Oh, and one final thing. Your text doesn't make sense. You say in the strapline you are offering a 'Magazine style shoot*- £25 + Travel' yet you also go on to say the price includes 'Cost for travel to location/s'. it's sort of contradicting itself, although I know what you are trying to say.

Child Portraiture:

No issues here with the actual photography, just with the gallery layout and the speed of transition.

Events:

Same grumbles as before, but an additional one for the explanatory text on the right. It doesn't quite read right and there's a few grammatical errors in there. It also looks a little strange with regards to the alignment of the text being to the left rather than spaced out more evenly, especially with the site being constrained to a certain width, regardless of browser size.

Live Music:

Interestingly this one did take a few seconds to load up. Not sure if that's my browser's cache or just a larger overall pre-load. Same issues as before with the gallery, but none whatsoever with the content.

Work in progress?

Blog:

I assume this is another work in progress page, although what I would say is that I'm yet to see a blog implemented successfully alongside a photography portfolio where you're selling to the public. They never seem to mix, but I'll be interested to see how you work this into the site.

Contact:

Ah, the good old Contact Form. How glad I am to see one of those on here. If you'd have left it off it would have looked so out of place, especially given the extremely professional sheen that the rest of the site has.

Perhaps worth removing your mailto link from the top right of the site and just leaving your phone numbers, given that the form is present?

You're the person I was hoping to come on here, and give me some critique, so thank you!

Well, I thought that, but as I designed it on a 1280x1024 pixels screen, I never gave it a though, I just assumed it'd fit right, with the measurements I inputted, but I guess not. I'll have to give that a re-think, and re-design. I was hoping that the top menu, and the main part would fit, but I think it's slightly too much?

The menu bar is annoying me too, as I can't seem to get it right. The button you have selected isn't in-line with the others, so therefore looks odd, and less-professional.

As for the fly-out menu, I used to have a highlighted part when you move the mouse over the icons, but I wasn't too keen on it. Do you think it's much better with one? I've added it back on for you, to have a look.

Yeah, I just added the images on as a temp thing, so if anyone clicks onto Portfolio, it's not a blank page. I have a program called Poladroid, which makes better images, so I'll use that, and write on them in Photoshop with a better font, and also arrange them better.

For all of the galleries, I've not changed all the timings to 8 seconds, as opposed to 3 seconds. I still need to work on the image sizes though, as I want them to be about 50k, but they're all 350k averaged out.

I'll also work on the sizing, so that everything should fit on the screen in a normal browser. Are you on IE/Safari/Firefox etc?

Well, the images I PP are usually dark, so that's the images themselves, as opposed to the site, I think, but I'm on dealing with that. :)

The text I put up on there for the moment was just another temp thing, so there was something there, but I need it all re-worded, and a better layout.

For the Event page, I've also left aligned the text, as opposed to right aligned. Do you think it looks any better now?

Packages are a work in progress. I'm not sure wether to includes the packages on the pages themselves, or in a seperate section.

Well, for the Blog, I was just going to have one where I can post up a few pictures from each recent project, so people can see what work I've been up to, and there's also more images, which won't be in the galleries on the main pages etc. I wouldn't be personal about it, as such. It'd be a case of saying "A recent shoot that I did for a car... Some pictures, and that's it".

You think? I thought if it has a e-mail address, and telephone numbers, then no matter on what page people were on, they'd be able to click, or call to get in touch.

Oh really? Well, it's nice to be appreciated!

Well, I thought that, but as I designed it on a 1280x1024 pixels screen, I never gave it a though, I just assumed it'd fit right, with the measurements I inputted, but I guess not. The newly re-sized 'centre' really looks great now. I might have been a little out with my previous 'standard' browser window as Vista is doing its best to annoy me today, but the new version looks excellent.

The menu bar is annoying me too, as I can't seem to get it right. The button you have selected isn't in-line with the others, so therefore looks odd, and less-professional.
That's a bit annoying. Does it load a different button on mouseover?

As for the fly-out menu, I used to have a highlighted part when you move the mouse over the icons, but I wasn't too keen on it. Do you think it's much better with one? I've added it back on for you, to have a look.
That now looks absolutely brilliant. Totally professional and just adds that extra bit of polish to the site.

I'm getting 9 seconds? And as for the images, what sort of resolution are you working with? 350k seems rather large.

I'll also work on the sizing, so that everything should fit on the screen in a normal browser. Are you on IE/Safari/Firefox etc?
I'm a FF user.

I would say that a little 'teaser' on each portfolio page and then a real hard sell on their own pages would be a nice little mix. Enough on the portfolio to make me want to find out more and then an easy way to get to the real thing when I need to.

Now that's more like it. Sort of like a 'latest news' section, in a way?

You think? I thought if it has a e-mail address, and telephone numbers, then no matter on what page people were on, they'd be able to click, or call to get in touch.
Being honest I'm not sure. I'd like to think that if people want to email you they'd go to the Contact page but by having your phone number on each page you might get more 'direct' enquiries than by having the mailto there as well.

And I've just had a thorough check through on IE7 and it looks just as fantastic as it does on FF3. I'm seriously impressed with this.

What is annoying is that you seem to suffer from the same problem, in a manner of speaking, as I do. A lot of your shots are in portrait and when displayed on a screen that's more suited to the landscape aspect it feels like there is loads of wasted space.

It's a pain, because getting some form of thumbnail navigation in with the images means you've got to juggle space and there's not always room to play with. What you've done looks great but I'm wondering if there's scope to move the thumbnails over to the right and give the portrait aspect photos a little more room.

One last thing. You know where you've got 'Site contents copyright © 2009 KT Photography.' and the last bit hyperlinks to a new browser window? I was wondering if you could link that to a Terms & Conditions page where you outline your usage policy, copyright info, etc.

Yeah, I saw your comments on other threads. :)

Thanks. I was unsure about it at first though. I changed the vertical size, and it looked weird top aligned, so I centred it, and it does look better. Yeah, it does. It's like a whole menu though, instead of individual things, so I'll have to either do a new menu, or live with that lol.

I might have put the first one onto 9 seconds, and the rest 8. I'll re-do them all though, as I need to re-align the gallery sizes, so the images aren't scewed etc. I just exported in Photoshop gallery at 10 quality, and 640 pixels wide. I'll reduce it to 500, and maybe 8, to see the difference.

I'll bear that in mind.

Yeah, kind of like that, but instead of a boring news bit, it'd be like a picture version.

True. I removed it also.

It is annoying, but I'll see if I can find a way around it.

Yeah, I'll do that too. Thanks for the comments. More ways to improve the site would be appreciated too! :D

As the site itself is sort of 'fixed' rather than scaling for different browsers it might be worth exporting to just the right size for each image.

Try using the 'Save for Web' dialogue instead of the 'Save As' so you get a little more control over the filesizes.

That's a good idea. A little bit of text and a couple of pictures to wet the appetite and then lead them on to the galleries.

The homepage is going to be key. You've already got a highly-professional-looking template to work with so the content needs to match. Nothing too flashy but something that really sells the site and makes me want to look around a bit more.

You'll need some welcoming text, although nothing too wordy, and a decent selection of images to rotate through. Maybe you could also have a small area reserved for latest news updates; not the whole article but maybe just the date and a single line of text that visitors can click on to head to that particular 'story'.

Cool, like the look and menus, fits my screen fine 1900x1200 and loads quickly on a 20meg connection ;-)

Good job mate

Well, for my workflow, I use Lightroom for images, and save them at 900px at their widest for use on Facebook/MySpace/Flickr etc, and they're quite bit. But I actually use the Photoshop built in web gallery to re-size the images, and make them smaller, as I use that to send to people for their online gallery.

I had a check last night, of the sizes for the images, and they seem to be 500px wide, so I re-done the images again at that size, and 10 quality, as opposed to 12, and they're all now 80k on average, so that's a whole lot better. I just need to re-upload them now.

Yeah. I just need to work on a layout first, but I think I'll follow the polaroid style, and then just mess around with that.

Right. How about maybe four vertical images, which cover all of the main page, which will usually be my four best images, from all the different photography I've done? Do you think those will do, or do you next text too, as I was trying to keep the text to a minimum?

Cool, like the look and menus, fits my screen fine 1900x1200 and loads quickly on a 20meg connection ;-)

Thanks mate. :)

Hi Keith, seen your work on another site and have to say it looks great

Looked at and though your site just now and cant seem to find anything at all wrong with it, everything looks great, loads well and does as needed, well done

Thanks mate. Which other site was it?

I did used to have it all big and bright white/pink, but it didn't seem to go well with the pictures, as the majority are low key stuff, so I went back to the black design, how it originally was.
