Just after a spot of advice really from more knowledgeable folks here on TP

I have a Canon 100-400mm IS USM L lens around 2 years old, i dont use it much to be honest.

I am thinking of selling it and getting a 2 x converter to go with my 70-200mm F2.8 IS MK2 (which i love) Would the converter work ok with this lens ??

Would this be a good idea so i dont have to carry aorund the 100-400 around with me just in case especially when i hardly ever use it. :(

Then the remainder of the funds from the sale of the 100-400mm could go towards a pre owned 24-105mm that i have wanted for sometime.

really would like to know your thoughts on my idea, especially if you have done something similar in the past.

Thanks for any input

Darren

get the CANON mkIII x2 extender and yeagh your good to go.. perfect marriage with the 70-200 mkII

cheers for that, peace of mind is all that required before i go-ahead & do this

I have a mk2 70-200f2.8 and have used my mk2 2x on it with no problems.

Have to be honest I hardly use my 100-400 now for this very reason.

n00b question but what does a converter actually do? I guess it alters the focal length in some way?

Yes, it multiplies the focal length by 1.4 or by 2. Since the physical aperture of the lens doesn't change, a side-effect of this is that you lose 1 or 2 f-stops.

For example, suppose you have a 100-300mm f/4 lens. With a 1.4x extender it becomes 140-420mm f/5.6, and with a 2x extender it becomes 200-600mm f/8.

Read and understood, thanks Stewart!
