Yes
I've been looking at the rugged drives to go with my new mac but there seems to be quite a few options. Thunderbolt, USB- C etc. Which one should I be looking at as I've no idea what the difference/performance is

Another option if you really want rugged is the G Drive EV ATC drive.

When I was looking at external drives last year I found there wasn't really any speed performance between USB3 and thunderbolt if you are using standard hard drives.

May just get the Wd Passports for Mac
You don't have to get WD Passports for Mac, any WD drive will work fine when formatted correctly. I run a couple of WD my passport portable hard drives for offsite backups and another for time machine.

The mypassport drives are terrible for reliability.

But as long as you have another copy of your data you'll be fine.

Exactly that. I have 2 on my desk right now - one is dead. I must buy another.....
