Hi what type of lamps would you recommend for macro would a normal desk lamp be ok or other?

Try a macro lens mount flash or just a normal speedlite, if you don't have there have a look on EBay or Amazon, there are great bargains to be had out there.

Thanks Callum I've got a metz speedlight I was just wondering if anyone used desk lamps and if so what watt bulbs etc

In theory you could use a [diffused] desk lamp and that would almost certainly require tripod and long exposures. Electronic flash is getting closer to truth, depending what your setup is. A few more of those with the right modifiers or ring flash and you are probably talking about a perfect setup.

Iv'e got a tripod, shutter cable, flash and a 60mm macro lens and some extension tubes and with the weather being so poor recently, thought about trying some close up and light painting, water drops etc in the garage but dont really want to buy a ringflash if i can get by without one

Water drops will require fast action freezing flash, and some kind of motion trigger?
