Not bad landscape images at all there Bill, as for the use of a telephoto lens who says it shouldn't be used. It works well here as it compresses the scene and makes it more interesting. The second is my fav in the set.
I've used a 70-200 many times in my landscapes - they do have a purpose and sometimes a 17-40 or 16-35 is simply too wide and your subject is then lost in the shot.
I think #2 above shows this to be true - it compresses the distance between the trees and the mountain range whereas with a wide angle the mountains would be way way in the distance.
