Hi all,
ive been searching for a landscape lens and was looking at the canon 10-22mm or the tokina 11-16mm,now on some review sites ive read they are not ideal for landscapes (being too wide ),
so what lens would best suit my 450D for landscapes,if non of these are not ok,:bang: :help:
regards john.

I would say the 10-22 and Tok 116 are both perfect for landscapes

They may be too wide on a ff but on a crop they're pretty spot on.

What reviews said they were too wide?

Hi jno,
thanks for the prompt reply,i will search my history to see if i can find the review,

it was digital guru said the tokina 11-16 is too wide for landscape pics ?:cuckoo:

The kit lens is good enough for landscapes, but if you'd like something of higher quality, but in that range i'd look at the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or the Canon 17-40 f/4L

I use a Canon 10-22mm for landscapes.
I've also read various comments saying these are two wide but I disagree.
My advise would be to pop to a shop and try them out.
I didn't do this because I was set on the Canon and the photos I had seen were enough to convince me.
However, when I first got the lens I was very surprised and impressed at how wide it is.
You can always crop a photo but I rarely do this for my landscape shots width wise.
Don't forget the Sigma as well, it's a very good lens but as many will tell you, try one out in a shop as they do have some QA issues.
You can always try to get a retailer to compete on the price of the Sigma and this would save you any hassle should you receive a bad copy via an online seller.

I guess it is personal preference to a degree. Yes 17/18mm is fine for landscapes and I will be using my 17-50 as such, but I would like either a Canon 10-22 or another Tokina 116 when I can afford one again. I don't think they are too wide on a crop. Have a look on the lens samples on POTN and see what you think.
The Tokina can be had on import for about £420 (plus duty, maybe) and the Canon can be had for about the same 2nd hand. Hashcake has covered the Sigma :)

I have found that the EF-S 17-55 is a belter of a lens

 Yeh me too! Never thought of getting a dedicated landscape lens as I just stitch 2 or more together!

This is coming from someone who was considering buying an imported lens, think carefully..
Onestop digital are quite often the cheapest HK seller and they have a very good reputation.
However, when I checked their T&C's it states 'We also offer 6 months warranties for all our flashguns and camera lenses.'
I double checked this with them and it is correct.
I could accept having to send an item back to HK for a warranty repair if the purchase price difference was massive, however; I'm getting the lens for £30 more in the UK and for me, the price difference is not a worth 6 month warranty on a lens.

I know it's not often we hear about a lens having a fault within 6 months but it's not a risk I am prepared to take.

There is no question that this is an excellent lens and although many consider it an L quality lens.
Due to the fact that Canon do not class this an L lens, it's very expensive.
The new Tamrom 17-50 f/2.8 VC will hopefully give this lens a run for it's money.
We will soon see as members here start posting over the next few days.

I bought my Tokina 116 from fujisunrise on eBay.
Copy was perfect, shipped with the 2 year Tokina International Warranty card which sophos and I both confirmed would be ok with the UK distro.
There is a thread about it on here from a few months ago :)
I would not hesitate to use fujisunrise again for lenses, the only reason I didn't get my Tammy from him was him not stocking it ;)

If you have a lens that is in the 17-50 range then that 11-16 would be my recommendation.

I think the sites that say these lenses are too wide for landscapes make a very valid point - a lot of landscapes need wide - but a lot more don't. I have a 12-24mm and I do find myself shooting a lot more in the 16-24mm range than I do in the 12-16mm. It is very easy to get drawn into pulling the zoom right back and fitting as much in as possible, but unless you have a very strong foreground interest you risk filling the frame with too much and making the individual elements too small.

For me the 12-24mm is my landscape lens and I don't have a standard zoom - but I am seriously looking at getting the 11-16mm and complimenting it with something in the 17-XX range to compliment it.

From what I have discovered, Tamron no longer supply an international warranty card in the box.
That's the main reason that put me off but I forgot to add then in my previous post.

Just bought a Sigma 10-20mm from a chap on here, not had a chance to use it though

Does seem to be bit of a lottery getting a good one, but if you do they are very good from what iv'e seen and heard

Can't see how the much vaunted 17-50 VC would be a better bet for landscapes (not even proved yet to be as good as the older model)
I have an excellent example of a 17-70mm, but found I wanted/needed something a bit wider

Did consider the Tamron 10-24mm and saw one at a great price, but from a sample pic of that specific lens and from reading the reviews it seems sharp in the centre, but very soft at the edges

Hoping to get out Sunday and will also post some pics

Not quite sure where anyone said that the 17-50 VC would ideal for landscapes, in fact I said I wanted wider and hashcake said he was using wider  Hey ho.

I agree though that I have not seen one shot from the Tamron 10-24 that would make me choose that over any of it's rivals, Id even risk a Sigma over one.

John if you can find a proven copy of the Sigma then it's a good buy. Otherwise imo it's between the Tokina and the Canon, that is of course if you feel you need it that wide.

Eh?
I am confused...
Do you mean with regard the comment I said about your post about the Tokina via import?
I made the mistake of assuming onestop digital would be most peoples choice of HK based sellers, I totally forgot about those on ebay.
I got so wrapped up with the idea of them refunding import charges that I didn't consider that some ebay sellers might sell the lens with a 2 year international warranty.

If you mean with reference to the Tamron 17-50 VC, this was with regard to what swag72 said about the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

I think things went slightly off topic and confused the point of this thread.

I know very little about Tokina lenses and their QA, perhaps someone else can advise the OP?
Just an idea, if you decided on a Sigma, you could buy one via forum classifieds as I believe the previous owner would only have accept a good copy in the first place.
It'd safe the hassle of sending one back halfway across the world if it turned out to be a bad copy.

I've just read a couple of reviews on the Tokina 11-16mm and they were very good.
While googling I found a review from Ken Rockwell : 'If you want an ultrawide zoom for your Nikon DX DSLR, this is my top suggestion as of 2008. (For the D40, D40x or D60, you still need the Nikkor 12-24mm for autofocus, and for Canon, I'd get the excellent Canon 10-22mm.)'.

I know very little about Mr Rockwell but some say he is a photography god while others say you need to take what he says with a pinch of salt...

No :p I was merely asking tijuana why he thought the only two people who mentioned the 17-50 VC were recommending them over other lenses when in fact you use a 10-22 for landscapes and I would use something wider had I the funds ;)
