Ok, I'm picking up a Canon 5D Mk2 body towards the end of July, presently using a 5D Mk1 body.

So looking for an excellent quality wide angle lens for serious landscape photography in the not too distant future. Been looking at the Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 lens, hmmm quite a large price for this prime, but I appreciate you pay for quality..!

Anything out there by Canon that would come close..? Would the EF 24mm f/1.4 L be decent as a serious landscape lens..?
What about the Voitlander range of glass, are they worth considering also..?

I don't mind if its a prime or short zoom, but I'm after the quality end product.

It doesn't get much better than the awesome 17mm TS&E. superb quality and allows you to do things other lenses just can't do. You could also add the 24mm TS&E to the list. Both are expensive but you get a lot for your money. The Zeiss 21mm is very nice but I personally prefer the TS&E lenses. I've owned all 3 and would go 17,24 and then 21 in order of favourites.

Would the 17mm size lens not be too wide..? I've owned a Samyang 14mm lens on a full-frame sensor and found that way too wide for me, so a 17mm isn't much different I'm sure.

However, on returning from millionaire's row, (;)) I use my 17-40 F4L for most of my landcapes with no problem whatsoever providing I stop down a stop or two.
 
I certainly agree with Gary about the TS-E,I have used a 24mm Mk1 and now have a 24mm Mk2 on a 5DMk2 and they are superb,the Mk2 is better than the Mk1 but then again it should be as it is about 2.5* the price.
I can't comment on the 17 v 24mm bit as I have never used the 17mm TS-E but I do have the 17-40 f4 and have not found the 24mm TS-E restricting in that I need the 17mm very often.
If you decide to go down the TS-E route personally I would hire one or both to see which suits you best,they are not cheap even used and you would not want to end up buying the wrong one.

Another vote for the TS-E lens. The canon mark2 24mm is an excellent lens it easily beats the nikon version. I'd probably go for a 24mm to start off with because you can always shift if you want to go wider, although the 17mm TS-E would be second on my wanted list for serious landscape work.
