Hello again,

I've recently started with all this DSLR photography.

I would like to focus on taking picture of landscapes and I'm in North Wales a lot.

What lenses are best for this job for a beginner?

I current I have the 18-105mm and 70-300mm.

Thanks

I've spent a while looking at wide angle zooms. Originally I wanted a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 but these are harder to come by than hens teeth!

I'm set on getting a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 now (£400). Not sure I need anything faster for landscape, figure I'll be shooting with a tripod for my keeper shots.

Other alternatives are Nikon's recently released 10-24mm (£800) or Tamron's 10-20. The sigma is sharper at either end than the Tamron but the Tamron is sharper in the middle (from what I've read - not personal experience).

If you don't have a polarising filter already, you may want to pick one up (77mm). I grabbed a neutral density filter too for long exposure shots.

Wide angles are more prone to vignetting with polarising filters attached so it's recommended you get a thin one (I've seen Hoya recommended).

what do you find wrong with the 18-105? is it not wide enough? maybe something like a 10-20, 12-24 etc would be more suitable? to be honest for a beginner i cant see how there'd be a problem with 18mm. stopped down to f8-11 many lenses at the lower/middle end are similar.

Thats what i wanted to hear, I just wanted to know really is the lenses I've got will do the job.

I proberly will get a lens like the Sigma 10-20 but it will be around christmas now.

18mm is wide but those few extra mm on the lower end make a big difference. I'm sure it'll serve you fine but there's times when extra mm really help. I went out last weekend to shoot the Abbey near me, I had to stand close to move tree branches out of shot but in doing so, at 18mm ended up cropping the Abbey too.

Not really landscape but just an example.
