laptop not charging

Yes
My laptop keeps shutting down even though its plugged in to the mains.

I think that the cable may be broken about three inches down from the socket that plugs into the laptop. (there is a large bulge in the cable.)

Is it possible to cut off the jack & connect it further up the cable?

Thanks in advance

Spence

If it's still in warranty ... get the manufacturer to ship out another cable.... most are good at that... and manufacturers warranties can be 2 years.

If not under warranty, get your snips and electrical tape out!

i have done this about 4 times now on one of my laptops
it is the one my daughter uses funnily enough at full stretch across the room

Thanks for all your replys everyone.

Is it just a case of cutting away the plug re-connecting, like wiring a standard plug??

Spence

NO! Just re-connect the broken wire!

you can get a replacement adapter for about £25, a lot safer than trying to bodge it up. If for some reason you get it wrong or the cord gets pulled and those wires touch it CAN fry the mainboard.

Listen to Marac ^ he talks sense.

If you're talking about the 230v mains end of the power supply you should stay well away unless you are sure you are competent to do it. If it's the DC end it's a lot simpler but again you need to be competent to do it as you can't really do it properly without soldering, the connector for the laptop should be available in Maplins unless it's a proprietary type.

Aye, and forget all that new adaptor nonsense.

Join each wire together with a good twist, wrap it with insulating tape then more insulating tape around all the wires.

Job done and it will last for decades!

its not a Toshiba Qosmio by any chance? if it is let me know my laptop dead and the charger no good to me! the other thing to try is remove the battery and then try plugging it in, my battery was that goosed it would not even turn on with it attached to the laptop.

Michael.

I have a couple of spare laptop power adapters. If you post an pic of the adapter with the bottom side showing ( the side with all the info on) and a veiw of the jack plug. I will see if I have a suitable one.

Many thanks for all your replies. Its very much appreciated.

Sorry stressless its not a Qosmio.

Thanks namllihs, photo's as requested.
